Commuting to the Bronx from LI (Nassau)
So I'm starting a teaching job in the Bronx this September. I have to be at school by 8:00am. How bad is traffic along the cross island and over the Throggs Neck in the morning? I'm planning on leaving by 6:30am. Is that enough time?

That should be OK. How far away from the Throggs Neck is the school? I leave my house in West Babylon by 6 am and I'm crossing the bridge by 7ish. If you're on the Northern State, follow the signs that say whether the Clearview or Cross Island is better. I usually take the Clearview.

Re: Commuting to the Bronx from LI (Nassau)
I commuted from Wantagh to the north Bronx for 7 years. The mornings are not too bad. Like the other poster said, pay attention to Cross Island vs. Clearview, I also took the Clearview most of the time- same for the way home. In terms of what time you leave in the morning- it depends on where in the Bronx you are and if you have to find street parking. My school did not have a parking lot, so some days I spent a good amount of time looking for parking. I would leave a little early the first week or so just to get a feel for what it looks like for you. If you have to take the Cross Bronx leave plenty of time or find alternate routes! It's a mess some days!

My school is less than 3 miles off the bridge but 2 of those are on the Cross Bronx.

Agreed. It will be the cross island parkway that will slow you down so the Clearview might bee better.
Good luck!

At first, I'd leave a little earlier just to get the timing down. I lived in Levittown and worked in Elmont. If I left my house at 6:45, I'd get to work no later than 7:15. If I left at 7, I wouldn't get there almost 7:55!

I taught in the Bronx for 7 years and will be again this September. Now, I'm in Queens fairly close to the bridges, but at my old job I left here at 6:10 and would get there by 6:40 the latest traveling via Clearview, Throgs, Cross Bx, 3rd Ave exit. Parking was an issue. My new school takes a different route.
If I were you and if you don't have it already, get the Waze app--it takes traffic into account. Put in the address of the school at all different times of the day and you'll be able to judge the best routes/times for you.

I worked in the Bx for 3 years and commuted all the time. I agree with others, take the Clearview to the whitestone both ways. Also, depending on how traffic is on the Cross Island up to the Clearview, you can take Hillside Ave straight to the Clearview. I live off exit 15 of the SS so I didn't have to go far to get to the parkways and it took me about an 1 hr to get to work. Give yourself more time to get home. I don't know what exit your getting off/on at in the Bx but the 3rd Ave entrance will add an additional 30min alone on to your commute.

100% get the Waze app. It has cut like 20 minutes off our commute in the morning. The Cross Island can be rough- that's usually the time we're on it in the morning, but we don't stay on very long since we go into Queens.
