if you live with a family member or a friend and there is no formal "lease agreement," should you/could you get renter's insurance?

I had to show my lease agreement to get renter's insurance.

Yes.
It protects your items in the event of fire, water damage etc.
-We don't require lease agreements in order to get renters.

Im in a month to month lease with my landlord and when we applied for our renters insurance they didn't ask us for any documentation. We had our car insurance through Geico at the time and they did everything for us but the policy was actually through Travelers.

If you live in a room in someone's house that already has a homeowners policy on it you probably will not be able to get renters as the home is already insured.

Yes.

We had renters insurance while living in an apartment that was part of my aunts house.
