Bill Clinton at DNC
What'd you think?
I had a hard time connecting to him based on the history of his affairs. As a women, I found it hard to find him sincere in what he was saying.
It's not that I don't believe what he was saying, but more that he had to say it- kwim?
I don't think what he was saying is enough to push me to vote for HRC.

I don't find Bill all that polarizing, even with the history of affairs (many presidents have had affairs, just didn't get caught per se) I like the guy and think he was a good president. I think his speech was solid and passable, but wasn't awe inspiring or earth shattering.

This. I have always liked him and respected him, despite the affairs.
I was voting HRC anyway so I didn't need him to sway me.

I thought it was effective to show that she has spent her career working to make lives better for the less fortunate, whether it be women, children or the disabled, and that she gets things done. I understand that "Change Maker" was the catch phrase du jour, but it was a tad overused.

I had this conversation with DH last night. I liked him as a President and, despite his affair, I think he was a good one. However, I felt like he shouldn't have been there. IDk if it's my ego or what, but I felt like bringing in your husband to speak on your behalf because he had this role rubbed me the wrong way. Almost as though if I was going up for a job in my dad's industry and my dad made a phone call so I got the job. Again, probably just my ego and I TOTALLY get why he was there and spoke, I just think I would've rather my DH a supporter and not a speaker.

If I was her, I would use anything I have in my arsenal to ensure I win and beat Trump. Speak away Bill, speak away!!! lol

But the spouses usually speak at the conventions. Why is this any different?
ETA: watching it now, so no comment on the speech.

If the person who had that exact job for 8 years, and knows Hillary better than anyone says she's good for the job, that should carry some weight. We all know that everyone is pandering and saying whatever needs to be said to promote their candidate, but the impression is supposed to be that a former president is saying that Hillary is capable of doing the job, and I should know, since I did it myself, and I've known her for over 40 years. How it is actually perceived may vary, but I think that was the intent.

I thought it was very personal and I liked hearing their story. I actually learned a lot about her that I didn't know before.

I think this was actually more the point of him speaking. They spoke earlier in the commentary that people don't really KNOW Hillary or what type of person she is.
And like I said, I GET why he spoke. He did this job and he's her husband - which is the norm to speak - I'm just saying, FOR ME, I would've preferred him in the stands and him let me do it on my own. Again, purely my ego.

This. Plus, the spouse always speaks at the convention. He didn't speak because he was president, he spoke because he is her husband and is doing the same thing any prospective First Lady would be doing. The fact that he also happened to have been president too just means that he theoretically has special insight into what it takes to do the job.

Same for me too. I still don't love her, but she is much more human to me than she was before. He's also a really great speaker for this type of speech, which was more like a story than anything. I loved how he started it, too.

However, if he didn't speak, the ONLY thing the media would be talking about is how not even her HUSBAND can support her, so if HE can't, how can WE?
I realize that isn't the truth, but that's what the media would roll with. Politics isn't real life, unfortunately, and everything is tactical, even heart-felt, personal speeches. By him speaking, it actually does let her stand on her own more, and not have everything focused purely on him NOT speaking.

Re: Bill Clinton at DNC
I like Bill and think he was a very good President, overall. And I've been warming up to Hillary, especially when I consider the alternative.
But I didn't care for all the lovey-dovey aspects of the speech, since I kept thinking, "But...you cheated on her." Which surprised me a little because I didn't and still don't care what happens/happened in their marriage. It just rang insincere to me. But I did appreciate and like hearing about her early accomplishments and her doggedness when she was trying to improve the lives of other people.

Funny he didnt mention his impromptu meeting on the Tarmac with the attorney general. I'm sorry his speech didn't do it for me.

During his speech, he recalled her "call to duty" throughout their life together beginning in law school. He also discussed how she became involved in his administration, as well as tenure as NY Senator, is based on her ability and not an entitlement she received as a former First Lady, instead of a position she worked hard to attain. I knew she has always been an advocate for women and children's issues (both domestically and internationally) but he demonstrated that this has been a lifelong achievement of her and not just a result of her tenure as First Lady.

Did you think Melania speaking at the RNC was not the right thing? Not to flame you in any way, but I see it as almost sexist to think that a man cannot speak to support his wife, but it's been fine all these years for the wives to speak on behalf of their husbands who are candidates. I understand in this case you feel that way because Bill WAS president, but that's not HRC's "fault". Should she not have had him - her husband - speak on her behalf? Then what would everyone be saying? And aside from that, it is very common to have former president's speak on behalf of the nominee - so again, she would have been slammed if he didn't speak - as her husband AND has a former president. Of course his views are biased in her favor (and they should be - as should the views of anyone speaking at the convention), but having him speak was NOT like having someone call in a favor just because you know them.

For the same reason that Trump did not mention that Tiffany Trump is the offspring of an adulterous relationship, it wouldn't look good for the candidate.

Re: Bill Clinton at DNC
I thought Bill was a good president. The affairs don't have an impact on how I view him or Hillary. Trump also cheated on his wife and is on wife #3 but that doesn't impact the way I feel about him. Whatever happens in a marriage is between the two people in it and no one else's.
I personally enjoyed hearing the stories. Why wouldn't he speak on her behalf? Bill knows her the best and knows what it's like to be President. I am in awe of all of her accomplishments and her dedication to public service. Like Michelle Obama said, Hillary is overqualified for this position.

I'll preface this by saying I am not a Bill Clinton fan at all. However... People always talk about his affairs. Like he was the ONLY president in history who was a pig.
Guess what? Beloved JFK was a womanizing pig too. People acted like JFK was a god of some kind- meanwhile he was running around like a real man wh0re. As were several other popular presidents.
Franklin Roosevelt had a long term affair with his wife's secretary!
I'm not saying it's right, but I feel like Bill Clinton is the only one who gets called out for it.
