Job related - what should my wife do?

My wife is currently unhappy at her job.
The past few years since having DD and DS she feels she has been getting less and less work to do.
All the good/high profile tasks have been given to other people (they are very good at their job so its not bad that they get it)
She is basically just sitting around the office waiting for 7pm so she can leave.
Perhaps her boss thinks she is doing her a favor - "wife has kids so she wants to go home so I won't give her a ton of work"

She wants to look for a new job but there are a few concerns. She makes a very good salary (60% more than what I make) and her hours are good (9-7 right now).

Previously (pre kids) when she was working on the "good tasks" she would work until 9pm everyday and have weekend work at home.

I told her that she should stay as long as possible because if she gets a new job she'll most likely get a pay cut and have to work more hours.

She said that her job can't continue at this rate since she isn't doing anything, someone will eventually cut her job (I say wait until that happens)

Now she has work to do, but its not the work of her level. For example, if it was McDonalds - she would be a shift supervisor but they have her making fries instead.

Your thoughts?

Job related - what should my wife do?

Has she talked to her supervisor about her feelings?

Well...she has not said:
"I am a shift supervisor, I should be counting the till, setting up shift schedules, managing, etc...why haven't I been assigned those type of tasks?"

She has told her boss - "I would like to do more 'good/high profile tasks' likes counting the till, etc..." (even though with her job title should already be doing that)

She said - "Ok, we'll look into getting you involved with that stuff"

I truly think her boss is not trying to hold her back or anything.
I think her boss is thinking "Wifey has 2 kids and wants to get home to them so I won't give her these high profile/high hours work"

Also there is another person with the same title as my wife and he is a superstar. Michael Jordan level ability - so he is getting most of the good work - which is understandable.

I think your wife (or you) is reading into it too much. If she's there 9am-7pm, it doesn't make sense that they aren't giving her work because she has children...because that's already 50 hours a week she's there (without her kids) that she could be productive.

I guess I kind of need more information on what job she does exactly. But I find it hard to believe there's no other jobs she could get - if she's as good as you say - for the same (or higher) salary. Also, I'm not sure what industry she's in, but 9am-7pm aren't "great" hours if you ask me. They're typical or even a little long.

She should talk to her boss again if she's happy there. And maybe explore other options in the meantime.

Hello,

>>Also, I'm not sure what industry she's in, but 9am-7pm aren't "great" hours if you ask me.

She is in the Finance/Banking industry.
Previously (pre kids) - she was working 8-8 most of the time, with some 11pm/midnight days every other week, not to mention weekend work.
Heck even me (computer industry) - I'm in the office from 8:30 to 7pm everyday and I'm usually one of the first to leave.

>>But I find it hard to believe there's no other jobs she could get - if she's as good as you say - for the same (or higher) salary

My point is...for her type of job, if she gets another one for close to the same salary, it will involve MORE hours than what she does now, since the type of work she does usually involves a lot of hours. (and I never said she was that good) :)

Job related - what should my wife do?

Honestly, I would just stay. They probably are trying to be nice, and I would just enjoy it. 9-7 for finance isn't great, but it's pretty typical. Dh works 7-5/6 most days. At a certain salary level in finance it seems like 10 hour days are the norm

9:00 am until 7:00 pm is a LOOOONG day. I would consider sending out some resumes.

How long as she been there? In finance, you are usually entitled to a nice severance if you have been there awhile. If she thinks they will eventually lay her off, maybe it's worth riding it out and collecting that check and then looking for something else.

9-7 is a long day and it's late. When I was working, my hours were 8-6 , we were all swamped and overwhelmed. Everyone was gone by 6 though. She should stick it out if lay offs are Imminent. If not, she may want to start looking for something with better hours. Do you have kids? If so, she likely doesn't get to see them much getting out at 7 pm.

She 100% has to address it with her boss/supervisor. Not trying to disparage your wife at all but could it be performance related? You said she works with superstars, they could just be better suited for those assignments based on skills and that's why....there is very little compassion in that industry so I wouldn't hang in hat on anyone being nice but that's just my experience. Also, withholding "good" assignments from women/mothers borderlines on discrimination it's not doing us a favor. So I'd definitely 100% adress it if she thinks that's what's happening.

Never quit a job until you have a new one. That's my only advice.

I know this is unrelated to the post, but I also work in IT and just wanted you to know that unless you are getting paid hourly, there are better places out there.

For a very long time I was abused and worked those hours. We were understaffed and management forced us to work longer instead of getting tools and the help that we needed. I did that for 10 years. I finally got fed up and left. I got a 30K increase at a new job and now it's basically a 9-5 during regular operations. Sure, I'm on call sometimes and some days stuff breaks and I'm there until 7 or I need to start my day at 7 instead of 9, but its few and far between. (once a month, maybe?)

Since my previous employer was my first I thought that was the way it was. I thought working in IT was 8A-8P+ and I just had to deal with it. It took me a long while to realize it's not. So unless you have some circumstances where you don't think could be replicated at a new place, don't sell yourself short. Take a look and see what is out there.

Re: Job related - what should my wife do?

I used to work in the financial industry before I switched careers because I just couldn't do the long hours and traveling all the time anymore. A regular day when it wasn't busy for me was like 8a-6p. It's tough because if you need her salary then I wouldn't just leave. Maybe she can talk to her boss to ask for additional responsibilities, but she may be required to put in more hours. The other alternative is maybe she can start sending resumes to see what else is out there.
