Talk to me about Fabric softner - Dangers?
So I have been doing some research about Fabric softer. It says that Fabric softener is THE number 1 cause of inside air pollution in a home.
Is this true? Does anyone here know about this kind of stuff?
I changed to a company called Melaluca YEARS ago. The reason I use all their cleaning products is because they are supposed to be VERY natural and a LOT less chemicals. I have asthma, so it really appealed to me. One thing they pushed that your cloths are filled with chemicals from washing. ANd the less chemicals on your cloths the less it will activate asthma.
After doing research I also saw that fabric softer can stain your cloths. For, well, EVER, I would have "clean" cloths come out of the washing machine with brown stains on them. I NEVER know what the hell it was from. I KNEW I wasn't spilling stuff beforehand. Plus I usually hang all my cloths to dry because they are cotton. SO they are NOT getting burned by the dryer.
I stopped using Fabric softer for about 6 months now. I have never had a stain on cloths since.
But how much of the truth of indoor air pollution is there to the fabric softer thing?

I wonder if the dryer sheets have as much chemicals as the liquid softener?

All I know is fabric softener is filled with chemicals and that can not be good for you. I don't use any type of softener right now, but I'm thinking of buying wool balls. They're supposed to be really effective and last up until 1,000 loads.

i use the wool balls. I hand dry most of my things and then put them in the dryer for like 10 min to soften up with the balls which I spray with essential oil for a nice clean scent

I never use fabric softener or dryer sheets, they seem unnecessary, I don't like my clothes to have a scent. My husband noticed years ago that his dress shirts had weird oil splots on them after drying them and did some digging and realized it was the dryer sheets.

So I'm guessing the wool balls don't have a scent? Are there any with scents?

I mostly use white vinegar as my fabric softener. It's a natural softener and it disinfects too. I still use fabric softener here and there though.

Re: Talk to me about Fabric softner - Dangers?
We never have used fabric softener or dryer sheets. They are not recommended for people with allergies. My family didn't use them and I don't now. I have had stuff washed over the years with it and the smell bothers me. I don't miss not having it. You really don't need it.

Re: Talk to me about Fabric softner - Dangers?
I'm not a fan of fabric softener because I feel it ruins your clothes. It breaks down the fibers faster IMO.
Also I read to never use it on towels as it will decrease their absorbancy.
I do like a nice scent on my sheets though - so on those I use the Gain fireworks or Downey unstoppables. It's just scent, not softener.
I don't use it on my clothes though because me and DD have sensitive skin

I never use any of it. It's all chemicals. I use trader joes detergent and wash everything in cold water. I'll use the dryer for like 20m and then line dry most everything except my sweats I wear in the house. If you want "smell" they make lavender bags you can dry your clothes with.

Trader joes has them but I am sure Amazon does too. Also most all Heath food stores.

I get all my household products from Melaleuca too. Price is much better than Seventh generation or method etc. I don't use anything with harsh chemicals...I have an autoimmune disease and I've have drastic improvement in my health since the swap out. Also my son's excema is gone. I've never used fabric softener plus don't need to bc the detergent makes my clothes soft anyway.
After doing research I also saw that fabric softer can stain your cloths. For, well, EVER, I would have "clean" cloths come out of the washing machine with brown stains on them.
