Verbal offer revised?
Has anyone heard of a company who gives an initial verbal offer which is accepted and then the company come back a few weeks later while you are waiting for the official offer letter and get a revised verbal offer that is lower?

Verbal offer revised?
I know where I work we do not do that but I guess since nothing was signed the company can do that. I do not think it is a good practice and I am thinking something with the budget happened but I am sure it is not unheard of.

I have never heard of that, and that sounds to me like a violation of the agreement. A verbal agreement is still a contract and you can't just change it because it hasn't been written down if it was already accepted. I would say that the person who accepted the offer does not have to accept their changed offer. I probably wouldn't accept it if they're screwing around like this from the beginning.

Re: Verbal offer revised?
I had that done to me. There was the initial offer, and I negotiated it all verbally. A few days later when the letter came it had the initial offer. They did claim it was just an error with HR not updating the info but to be honest it set the tone. I took the job (at the higher negotiated rate) and left 6 months later because they could not get their act together for anything. And this was a for a very popular HUGE corporation.
Your friend was smart for turning it down. If that is how they treat people they are trying to recruit I can't imagine they are loyal to their actual employees.

Re: Verbal offer revised?
Waiting a few weeks between a verbal and written offer is crazy. Usually by the time I hang up from receiving the verbal offer, the written is arriving in my inbox.
Also, I'd never accept a verbal only offer.

No she was told that she would be getting a written offer once her background check cleared

Re: Verbal offer revised?
Was this a bank? This happened to me once (I had to wait for the letter until after my background check). This is not the norm and it wound up being an awful place to work
