Who's good at understanding health plans? Need helping picking one!
I am switching jobs, and my options are HIP or the Empire Plan through NYSHIP.
Here's the summary of benefits for both: 1. https://www.cs.ny.gov/employee-benefits/sbc/pdfs/2016/empire-plan-non-grandfathered-sbc-2016.pdf
Empire Plan- About $180 for a family biweekly
2. https://www.cs.ny.gov/employee-benefits/sbc/pdfs/2016/hip-sbc-2016.pdf
HIP- under $100 biweekly.. it is an HMO though, and I've only had a PPO plan before.
I know nothing about choosing a healthcare plan really, and I find it so confusing. All I know is that most of the coworkers choose the Empire Plan. If you can provide some help and guidance I would really appreciate it!!!

I have the Empire plan through NYSHIP and love it. I am not sure what your plan will entail but mine is excellent. I have no complaints and so much is covered and many doctors take the plan.

I have Empire myself and do medical billing. Hands down Empire Plan. Never have any issues with Empire and they cover everything. Hip which is part of Emblem is currently my least favorite insurance to deal with.
ETA I actually just looked up that HIP plan out of curiosity because I've never heard of it and it's pretty good. I think if it will save you money it's pretty good coverage and actually would be less out of pocket expenses for you.

I was under the same impression with the HIP plan, and when I was looking at it I thought it wasn't too bad. But I kept hearing everyone say HIP is bad, so I wanted to ask all of you if maybe I was missing something? lol... All of the doctors and pediatricians I see are providers in the HIP plan as well... I am meeting with HR tomorrow for the job and I will get some more info on the plans from them.

Agree 100%. I would chose the NYSHIP, hands-down. I know that this does not impact everyone, but NYSHIP has VERY generous infertility coverage. I never thought I'd need to use it, but after trying for a while with no success we found out that DH had some issues with his numbers and had to go the IVF route after numerous failed IUI's. I paid very little out of pocket for all procedures including all the necessary medications. Just something to think about!

DH had NYSHIP when we first started dating and he needed to see a neuro for headaches. I must have called 10 doctors before I found one who took it. This was in the city though.

The Empire coverage looks great. I had HIP (many many years ago so it's probably different now) because it was the cheapest option. After a couple years of it, I decided from then on, I was going to get the best health plan available as long as I could afford it. So, for me, I would pick Empire, but you need to evaluate based in your own health care needs and finances. Also, make sure you are checking the doctors under your specific plan.

Empire NYSHIP no questions asked. You couldn't pay to take hip. Being in the medical field for 10 years, Empire NYSHIP is great and I'd do anything to avoid needing a referral for specialists
