I just saw a quote from someone who said "I voted no because I didn't think my vote counted."
I'm sorry but this makes absolutely no sense whatsoever he voted no because he didn't think his vote counted and now he is upset. so why didn't he just vote yes?? generally if you think your vote doesn't count you just don't vote, not vote the opposite of what you really want
or was he really uninformed
either way he is an idiot you voted and you got what you voted for so there is nothing to complain about
Some people thought it was a "protest vote" and that it wouldn't actually happen. It still hasn't happened because Cameron won't notify the EU of its withdrawal (Article 50). Cameron is leaving it up the the next PM.
ETA: I think people really need to think about what is going on with the extreme right around the world. An MP (Jo Cox) was killed in the UK by someone yelling "Britain first." After that, I thought that this Brexit wouldn't pass. I'm truly frightened by what's going on, TBH. Trump is just another facet to this.

Right - that's why I was kind of thrown off by the OP. A pro-Hillary / anti-Trump thread is one thing, but this doofus should not be part of the conversation lol.

ITA. I understand people don't go out to vote because they don't think their vote will count. But to actually take the time and effort to go to the polling place and vote the opposite of what you want is ridiculous.

IMO, this "doofus" should be included (see post above).

I thought the point of the OP was that we should vote (for Hillary) because our votes count.

so protest vote is voting for the thing you really don't want, sorry that argument still doesn't make sense so you hate trump and to protest him having the gop nomination you are going to vote for trump?? see, makes no sense
eta I know that you are very knowledgeable in politics and Europe, I read the threads but don't often comment on anything political but this just makes no sense to me

If you are politically on the fence use Brexit as your guide. Your vote DOES matter.
I'm guessing it's because we may not understand the concept of voter pride and high voter turnout in other countries as opposed to the US. (48% in the US, 76% in the UK) I often hear "I'm not voting because my vote means nothing/doesn't count" here in the US. Voting is a mark of pride and honor in many other countries, and voter turnout is much higher! It doesn't make sense to us that this man may have gone out and voted for whatever, just to vote. In the UK, this makes perfect sense. He went out and voted, which he may consider his civic duty. It really burns me up when I hear mIL and FIL talk about voting for someone, because, "hey, look at the alternative". Not a reason to vote, IMO.
Paramount, thank you for your post. Your parallel makes perfect sense to me.

That voter thought that his vote would be a show of protest (don't want to be in the EU anymore), but this voter didn't really understand what would happen. This wasn't the only person to do this.
I think what the OP is saying is that some people truly do not understand what a vote for Trump is. A lot of Trumpeters are going because he speaks his mind, he will stop many problems, etc. These voters don't understand what he can possibly do. Trump has given us very little info about his plans and the info we have gotten contradicts itself as well.
At least that's the parallel I got from the OP- Really don't like Trump? Vote against him.
I think the comparison is difficult because they are two different voting systems, but I see what the OP means.

Re: If you are politically on the fence use Brexit as your guide. Your vote DOES matter.
I think there is also something to be said for really knowing what you voted for. It sounds like many people in the UK cast their vote without knowing the repercussions and now regret their choice. Even though it may have been hard to predict the economic impact of the UK leaving the EU, I am sure some kind of good info was out there (at least, I would hope!).
I hope we Americans take this as a warning to find unbiased sources of information (even though they are harder and harder to find) and put emotion aside as much as possible when we go to vote in November.
