End of School Year - Melancholy

Does anyone get this?

I get such a feeling of sadness when I am wrapping teacher gifts and writing end of year notes. It makes me realize that my kids are another year older and moving up a grade and the clock truly is a ticking.

I am finding this year more difficult I think as my DS had an amazing teacher and my DD had her too and this is the end of the line with her teaching any of my kids and that makes me sad.

It all makes me sad - watching the high school graduates smiling from the local newspaper makes me weepy too.

Surely I am not the only one who gets this feeling at this time of the year?

I'm right there with you. Dd is only 3 but it has gone so fast. She's no longer a baby but a little girl. She wants to grow up so fast and I just want the days I'm with her to go slower.

Yes! My youngest is graduating from kindergarten. Both girls had the same teacher and I'm so sad that no one else will have her. I want her to teach 1st and 4th simultaneously lol.

And my oldest is almost done with elementary school.. 2 more years until middle school. That's hitting me hard.

End of School Year - Melancholy

My twins had prek graduation this week and I did have tears in my eyes. I am happy they are moving on from the teacher though it was not the best experience. I am just shocked that they will be in Kindergarten, they were just born!

Yes! Last year didn't hit me so much but this year suddenly I'm realizing that DS is going to be starting 2nd grade next year and I can't believe where the time has gone.

Yes! I look forward to not being on a schedule but get sad about them moving to the next grade and missing their teachers. My kids are weirdos and have been crying all week about school ending which doesn't help either Chat Icon

Same for me. Just yesterday I was dropping my daughter at Pre-K and in September she will be starting her junior year of high school!

It all went by in the blink of an eye. I need to slow it down!

I think last year when DS graduated kindergarten I was a little sad - but I usually get that melancholy when the summer is over.
I'm sure once by little one starts to go to school it will be harder since it will be THE LAST ONE. Chat Icon

Yes, I feel it a little bit every year but, especially this year when both my kids had great teachers and a great group of kids/parents in the class.

Re: End of School Year - Melancholy

It's awful! My dd teacher made a dvd of the kids from the 1st of Kindergarten until the last day and I sobbed watching it. It feels like it was just last summer when I was freaking out about her leaving prek. My daughter cried herself to sleep last night because she is going to miss her teacher so much. I'm very happy summer is here now and we can spend our days together again.

I am the same way!! Chat Icon I can't believe my DD is finishing up 2nd grade!!........................it feels like yesterday I put her on the bus for Kindergarten and I was bawling my eyes out like a baby. Now she's completed THREE YEARS of school already!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon It's going SOOOOO fast!!! I wish time would slow down!! I only have two years left home with my DS before he's off to Kindergarten and then I'll be home with no kids all day. That makes me so sad. Chat Icon Where did my babies go?!?!?!

On the plus side (for me).................June ending means I only have two months of summer (which I HATE) to get through and then I'm in my super happy place................the fall and the holidays!!! And a new school year always feels so exciting and fun too!! Chat Icon

Oh dear...I feel like this almost every day, I'm not even kidding.

Just a quick example...one day toward the beginning of June started with a pretty chilly morning. I was running some errands and I put the heat on in the car. Wouldn't you know, I almost started crying because it smelled like winter and then the kids would be a whole grade older.

Yes, I'm insane.

Re: End of School Year - Melancholy

Thank you all...glad to read that I am not the only one. My kids are excited that its their last day tomorrow and are excited to meet their new teachers so I am trying to absorb some of their excitement. I am really looking forward to having a schedule free summer and not having to pack lunches for 10 weeks!

Here's hoping i don't break out the tears saying good bye to my DS's teacher tomorrow.

Re: End of School Year - Melancholy

My coworker's daughter just graduated from hs, and I started thinking about 15 years down the road when dd1 will be graduating/heading to college and I burst into tears. Mind you, I'm so not the sentimental type at all!

Fire me, it's different. I teach and I love the end of the year but I will still see all my kids next year. They are just going to be down the hall, they pop in to say hi, etc. But as a parent, I'm crying. ds just completed pre k and I was a blubbering mess for that. He was there for 2 years, we loved his teachers, they loved him, he made so many friends and they are all somewhere different next year since it wasn't at a typical school. Plus, he was sick this week and miss the whole week so he didn't get to see everyone and say goodbye. So yeah... Tests have been shed.

Re: End of School Year - Melancholy

It has been hard for me every end of a school year. This year so much more. DS had his moving up ceremony to MS last Thursday, and it was tough. I know things will get more difficult... more homework, responsibilities, kids clicking and being mean with others, kind of a lot of their innocence getting lost. Time really flies, and now I understand that Chat Icon I can't even imagine when he graduates from HS

Re: End of School Year - Melancholy

This end of the year was really sad for some reason. I found myself sad all week just tearing up even though DS will be in camp in a week with the same teachers. I was sad that the kids in his class were leaving and we would never see them. I also got upset seeing Facebook pictures of my friends kids who went to the prom and graduated high school. It brought back my own high school memories and I missed friends that I grew apart from. It made me think that down the road that would be my daughter and son and that makes me sad. I just want time to stop and slow down. I look at my oldest who is 4 1/2 and I think wasn't he just born yesterday? It really goes by fast.

YES! DD starts kindergarten in the fall and when I watch all of the elementary kids on their last day of school I think "this is the last 'last day of school' for us that won't matter for the next FIFTEEN years", it makes me so sad!!!!

I don't have kids, but I teach college. I feel like that at the end of the semester. It isn't the same as other schools; I have a decent chance of never seeing them again. It's such a short period of time too...three months...or six for the students who take both of my courses.
