Question for teachers in Long Island Elementary Schools

Do you have a dress code?

I'm blown away sometimes by what the teachers in my kids school wear.

Question for teachers in Long Island Elementary Schools

I have 2 friends who are teachers and while I love them dearly, it amazes me how casually they dress for work

My SIL works in Riverhead and she wears business casual - think NY & Co and Kohls.

Re: Question for teachers in Long Island Elementary Schools

I spend a decent amount of time in my DD's school (not on LI, but in NY metro) and I never see anything questionable. But I used to teach in the city and I was sometimes appalled by how some of my coworkers would dress. Too much skin, especially from the younger teachers, and a few across the age spectrum looked like they literally rolled out of bed and came to work.

This. Before being a mom, I was a middle/high school teacher but for like 1/2 yr I worked teaching FLES in an elementary school. Ppl would usually dress professionally but here and there u'd see someone that apparently got dress in the dark.

Question for teachers in Long Island Elementary Schools

I teach in a public high school on LI and there isn't an official dress code that I know of (official as in its written down or actually discussed with teachers). Untenured teachers tend to dress up more in my school (i.e. males wear button down shirts with ties). Most tenured teachers dress somewhere on the spectrum of casual to business casual. Today, I have on khaki Bermuda shorts, dress sandals, and a short sleeved blouse. Some might consider it too casual, but I feel that I look professional. Teachers in my school wear jeans all the time, sneakers, etc. I don't think there is a correlation between dress and instruction quality. I know some amazing teachers who wear shorts and flip-flops and some pretty horrible ones that wear business suits, blazers, ties, etc.

No, of course there is no correlation between the way someone is dressed and their ability to do their job, but I do think that the way someone is dressed creates a certain impression - especially on young, impressionable kids - about how seriously they take their job and how they respect their "audience". That goes for any job - that's why I can dress more casually when I am just going to be in my office all day vs. when I have meetings with upper level management or will be in court. I am not at all saying what you are wearing is inappropriate, but the way one dresses and presents themselves to others definitely sends a message about how they want to be viewed by others and, in my opinion, also conveys a message of respect (of lack thereof) to whoever you are interacting with. If what you wear truly didn't matter, why would anyone dress up for an interview or any important event? It's because we all know, whether you (not pp, the generic you) like it or not that the way you present yourself does make a difference

I work in a HS and there is no official dress code. Most of my clothes are from The Loft and Banana Republic. I wear a lot of pencil skirts and sheath dresses - I LOVE getting dressed up. Towards the end of the year, I tend to dress more casually since its SO hot in my classroom. Today, I am wearing an a-line skirt, cardigan, and tank top with wedges. I definitely dress up WAY more than most of my colleagues.

If I was a elementary school teacher, I would probably not dress up as much, especially if I worked with K-3 students. With that age group, I really feel like you need to be able to move around easily - a dress and high heels would not make that easy.

I am sitting on the floor with small groups for most of the day. I can't do that in a skirt and won't do it in dressy pants.

I agree. I never have to wear a suit or anything too formal, but I always tend to wear something 'nice' to work.
Nicer if I am seeing customers or upper management, and especially if I am working in our nyc office which tends to have more customers and higher ups in and out than our long island office.
There are some people who work in my long island office that come to work looking worse than i would look to wash my car.
They may do a great job, and I am sure they do, and yes, it doesn't matter what they are wearing since they are not customer facing, but still, when I see that, it kind of brings down the professional feel of the office.

But, i also feel like I look like shitt in casual clothes. I am just not comfortable with the way I look in jeans or even pants. I have such a hard time shopping for casual things. 95% of my closet is work dresses, casual dresses, etc.
I have like nothing for the weekends in winter.
It's bad

Some of these teachers may be outside running around on the playground, getting sneezed on and covered in paint and glue, going straight to club or sports after school, sitting on the floor to do activities, crouching next to little tables all day, etc. I'm not dating I've never seen teachers push the limits on appropriateness but dressing casual in elementary wouldn't bother me. They also likely don't work in air conditioning and are probably starting to clean classrooms and store away materials this time of year. Climbing on chairs to hang posters or bulletin board decorations is not something I'd do in a skirt or heels of any kind.

Absolutely. My daughter's K teacher doesn't get dressed to the 9's. But she always looks neat and professional when I see her. You can wear jeans and look neat and professional or you can wear jeans an look like a slob.
I have seen both!

I teach in Florida and we are casual here. Flip flops, skirts, tank tops, capris etc. Jeans on Wednesday and Friday with spirit shirts. I am causal yet professional and most days wear a nice collared school polo with a shirt. I am a big dress wearer too. It's hot and steamy here!

I am a NYC teacher and am also blown away by how some of my colleagues dress. The flip flops, spaghetti string tanks, off the shoulder shirts, low cut shirts, and dresses with thong lines have all got to go. Extremely unprofessional.

So funny you posted this today, as I happened to be off and was at my mom's in Nassau and was walking her dog near the school when school let out today, and the first thought I had was damn teachers don't dress like they used too! The ones I saw looked like slobs, like how I would dress on a casual Saturday. So I guess there are no dress codes anymore.

Question for teachers in Long Island Elementary Schools

It has gotten so much more casual! In my current building (HS) there is no dress code, but I never ever wear Jeans, shorts, or sneakers. It's just not me. In hot weather I wear dress Capris and nice tops or a skirt. However, I've worked in more than one school district through a e-learning company. In one school on LI there is a uniform, and the teachers wear it too (khaki pants of your choice and a polo or sweater or sweatshirt) with the school logo. I thought that was cool.
In another school, I was so surprised to see jeans and sneakers every day! Like chucks and jeggings Chat Icon
In one of the buildings in my district, capris and open toed shoes are not allowed, neither are sneakers. Jeans on Friday with a donation to a charity. Meanwhile, the female students in that building dress like whores Chat Icon

Any job you have, you should be dressing appropriately. There is no excuse for not looking presentable. You are getting paid to do a job, look like you're a teacher and not a student. I have no issue with wearing appropriate jeans and a top or capris and flats in the summer. I don't expect teachers to be wearing suits or expensive clothes - obviously that is not that type of job. I do not expect to see skin tight dresses or shirts, leggings and sneakers, sweatshirts or flip flops. Not one of the teachers in my school is running around the playground - we have aides for that and all our buildings are air conditioned. I will say that most of our teachers do dress appropriately but the aides are a totally different story. Half of them look like they are rolling out of bed or heading to the beach.
