TACHS test

Do students normally prep and study for this?
We live in a heavy test prep area. I spoke to someone at TACHS Corp office and asked for a test prep book recommendation. She said no need to prep. Child just needs to know how to take a test and if they do fine in a school they should be ok.

Any advice? I'm looking to see if DD will qualify for a scholarship too.

Don't know the test, but was curious so I googled it. Looks like they not only sell prep books but offer prep classes. So yes some must prep.

Yes, my kids aren't at that point yet, but students in their school definitely take prep classes. Even I did back when it was called the "co-op" lol!

ETA: They go and I went to Catholic school, so it's sort of a given.

Eireann & I went to the same HS. I also did a prep course.
My son (who is now in college) went to our alma mater on scholarship. He was also offered one at St.Anthony's.. back then we were looking to move to Suffolk.
He prepped for 5 months, starting the summer after 7th grade up until the test. They thought him to be familiar with the test format & how to manage time in each section.. such as the skills they will need later on for the SAT & ACT.
It wasn't cheap but then again, it was definitely a return on my investment, I didn't pay 40grand for St Francis Prep.
Do it! It will boost your childs confidence & ability.

Edited to add: some schools have strict rules for scholarships. You have to list their school first in order to demonstrate interest.

Are you in Queens or on the island?

I took it way back in the day when it was the co-op, and I took a prep course with all my friends. I think it was at a school in Glendale.

This was.....18 years ago (I just died a little inside) and I don't know how it is now but the test was a big deal back then.

Re: TACHS test

Thanks everyone. I find it very interesting that this woman from TACHS based in Illinois told me test prep courses and books are not necessary!

I will at least get DD the books to study (even though this woman told me not to)!

DD usually gets 3s and 4s on NYS tests so I wonder is that counts as being a good test taker?

We are in district 26 queens

So this is the test that used to be known as the CO-OP? I took it forever ago, but yes, everyone in my grade prepped for it. We all went to a class...once a week I think for a number of weeks? Too long ago to remember! We had books too.

I'm in Whitestone, District 25 right next to you. I'm going to go out on a limb & assume your DD is currently attending public school, because if she was in a parochial... you would of had 10 meetings about this already! There is no way a woman in Illinois can possibly know the competition & dynamic in our area.
3's & 4's are great scores but IMHO she must study & prepare. All her peers will be. Plus, you have to do some of your own legwork. Attend open houses, see what's the best fit for her and narrow down the 3 schools you will be applying to. If you are hoping for a scholarship as stated, Prep, Molloy & Mary Louis all want to see you list them 1st for a full ride. Although some kids have gotten partial even when listed 2nd. (Except Molloy)
St. Mary's seems to be most generous. Lots of kids have gotten partial (including my own) when putting it 3rd. It's all kinda a strategy.
If Whitestone is not too far for you & you may be interested in a private tutor, I have a great one that specializes in TACHS. I can give you her contact info.
Personally I didn't do a group prep class for my son because I remember doing it myself & just joked around with my friends the whole time. $$ wasted.
What schools are you looking at?

Thanks. I will start by getting one of the prep books. Is Barron's good or do you recommend any in particular? Schools I am looking at are MLA and SFP. Marys in mahansset is a little far, no? She has to be able to get home by herself.

I am also waiting for her final grades to see what public high school options are.
