Name change process
What is the process to get your last name changed. I never changed my maiden name when I got married. Do I need to visit social security office and then Dmv? I know I'll have to change it on my health insurance and I'm guessing my credit cards?

Name change process
Yes, bring your marriage certificate to SS and then when you get the card you can go to the DMV. To change my health insurance I had to change my name at work, which I wasn't thrilled about (though I never changed my email/contact info so I'm still known as my maiden name). I actually never changed my credit cards and I haven't done my passport either.
ETA It actually wasn't as painful as I thought. SS took about an hour (I went downtown) and DMV was literally 15 minutes on a weekday at the Bethpage DMV.

You need to do passport, bank, credit cards, utilities, voter registration, airline miles clubs, etc.
It was a pain. Don't let you change online. Bank etc you have to show the new liscense.

I went to the ss office with my marriage certificate. Then I had a temp paper to bring to the dmv and the. Had my license changed.
Then I changed all credit cards, bank accounts, etc etc....annnd etc
Edit: DO NOT forget your passport. If you book a flight in your married name and your passport is in your maiden name they will not give a sht and you're not getting on that plane.

It was super easy. DMV and Social Security each took about 30 minutes. I called my credit card companies and most made the change over the phone. A couple of places required me to fax a copy of my marriage cert along with a cover letter, but that was easy and I just did that at work. I also did my passport which was super easy. Printed the app online and took a new pic and sent it in the mail. Everything was done the week we got home from our homeymoon.

When I got married in 06 I changed my name to my married name, and I just got divorced and went back to my maiden name. Both times the only time I had to go in person was to DMV and SS with the marriage certificate/divorce decree. Everything else I did online. I still have to change my passport but I'm going away in in 2 weeks and my tickets are in my married name and therefore will wait until after the trip. Either way, it's not a big deal and fairly easy
