Is this weird?
I dont think its completely weird. I ride the LIRR everyday, and I agree with one poster who said maybe he didn't know it would remain empty.
BUT, I will sit next to someone if the middle seats, the ones located in the center of each car, the seats that face each other even if, seats are wide open. I did it today, because I like the openness of those seats, I dont feel as crowded.

Thank god this guy was just reading a book.
What did you do?!
For a minute or two I sat there completely frozen and looked out the window while quietly trying to find a weapon in my bag. But then I got the nerve to get up without making any eye contact and run out of the car in search of a conductor. By the time I found one, the guy had gotten off (the train, lol) and the next stop.
It was terrifying, but makes for a funny story now.

Weird yes.
I would be unreasonably irritated. I cant stand that with a passion. I take an express bus into the city every day, so I deal with this all the time.

Me too. And I just like being able to lean up against something. More comfortable for me.

OMG this is horrifying. I cant imagine how scared you must have been. People are sick.

I was much younger and that made it even more frightening. I was commuting to college and I transferred out the next year.
