No way!!!!! should NOT be mandatory. This is getting so ridiculous

What is ridiculous about organ donation? You realize that donating organ can actually save lives, right? Maybe you think there is a presidential candidate who is proposing this idea, in which case, there is not.

What is getting ridiculous? I'm not being snarky, but I'm curious - do you mean that some people think it might be a good idea? Or the question itself? It seems to be purely hypothetical - I don't think there are any government people who are trying to bring this up as law (please correct me if I'm wrong.)

Personally, while I want to say I like the idea simply because there are so many people who just never think to register who would absolutely want to donate, but just never get around to it - there are many people who probably don't want to do it and it would be pretty unfair to make them put in the effort just to protect their own body and beliefs. the government trying to mandate things on us. No, not the question at all. I think organ donation is great, but to make it mandatory is ridiculous. Maybe I misunderstood post. I thought you were saying it will be mandatory, or was the OP just hypothetically speaking??

I think it should be. I work in medicine and work closely with KODA. The reality is a very very small percentage of people who opt TO donate will not get the chance. There are 2 types of donation here, atleast. Organ and tissue. Tissues are more likely and you can help up to 200 people! The requirements are very strict and many will not get the chance to donate. Organ donation is when someone is brain dead. Not many people are declared brain dead. It seems like it from the media but the reality is it's few. I wish more people donated and knew more about the programs. It's a beautiful gift to give. Let's say you are in a car accident and are declared brain dead from it. You could potentially save or help up to 225 people! That's A LOT of moms, dad's, brothers, sisters, babies, grandparents you can help in your death.

How is it done in NY? You actually have to fill out forms to opt in? In NJ and PA, I was asked when getting my license and you either say yes or no. I've always been an organ donor and talked my DH into it, I think it's an easy thing to do, and for a wonderful cause.

I was presuming that it was a hypothetical questions (OP seems to be posing a lot of questions like this lately.)
But, it did make me wonder - and I found THIS
Sounds like maybe other states have already instituted this. Sounds like a GREAT idea to me.

I'm just trying to see if I can get more activity on the forums with most of my questions lately.

However, thanks for posting that. I dug a little deeper, and found out that the law did pass, and now it is required in NY to pick, either "yes", or "skip this question", so we're sort of in the middle between opt-in and opt-out. Everyone must pick something. There is no default status.
The law took effect at the end of 2013, which is why I (and probably most of us here) didn't know about it.

Also, all major religions support and encourage organ donations, some with certain rules and guidelines. No major religion forbids it.

I just got a new copy of my drivers license - I'm officially an organ donor.

It was something i didn't want to have on my long list of things to get around to do - because those things never get done.

It was something I thought long and hard about.. Because it's something that makes you uneasy when you think about it (at least for me! I'm squeamish).

But if I can help save a life .. Or give a better life ... Maybe a little piece of me can live on in someone and they and their loved ones will be so happy. I can get on board with that.

there is no point being missed. basically you are allowing the gov't to control what should happen to your organs when you pass, unless you remember to opt out.

I am not an organ donor, and i would want my children to decide on their own whether or not they want to donate as well. if my child was born and died a day later, why should the govt now force me to bury my child with no choice but to have their organs removed. now if my child died a day later and they asked me, its something i would have to think about, but for them to say, sorry its mandatory unless you opt out is wrong on so many different levels, plus there are religions that do not allow organ donation.

After doing some more research, I found out that your scenario would never happen. The opt-in/opt-out/mandatory decisions would only be for adults, so children would not be automatically placed on any lists.

I couldn't find a single religion that outright doesn't allow organ donations.

Why not? If you do not believe in it for any reason opt out, I personally know people who are not organ donors but would like to be they just never opted in--if it was done for everyone there would be more organs to donate and it is not violating anyone's rights or religion bc they can opt out.

Also those who are not organ donors would you accept an organ if you were dying? Imagine there was a law that anyone who was not an organ donor would be denied an organ should they need it...that is something I could get on board with

I definitely think its a good idea to make it mandatory with the option to opt out. I don't think a lot of people really know how to sign up for it, and this would make it much easier, and those who have an issue with it could simply opt out. I am a big supporter of organ donation as my sister received a donation when she was little which helped her immensely.
