If Google Cars were available today...
If Google was able to sell their cars to the general public, and they were within the price range that you were planning on spending, would you buy one today?
Since this is a hypothetical question, we'll assume all of the laws and logistics have been worked out....
Personally, I don't want to completely give up driving myself, but for most cases, I would love to have an autonomous car.

I don't like giving up control. The plus though is there would always be a designated driver.

Hmmmm. I don't know. I like being in control of the car, personally. I actually enjoy driving. But I guess I could see the benefit of being on autopilot when taking a long trip... fewer stops to rest, could drive through the night without stopping... that sort of thing. And yes, crashes due to DWI would be pretty much non existent, I suppose.

I can see a benefit to this, like not having to worry about people driving when drunk, but at the same time I would feel nervous that the car would have a technical issue and crash.

Yes, but have you seen how many technical issues and crashes the current drivers have?
I also love the idea that you could have the car drop you off right in front of whatever building you are going to, then have it find a parking spot on its own, even if it's far away and in the rain. Then, when you're ready to go home, just summon it back with your smartphone.

Seriously! Is this a real thing? Something that will happen way in the future? Reminds me of the Jetsons!

Re: If Google Cars were available today...
The current Google Cars can drive by themselves. There's no reason why they can't park themselves. Just update some algorithms to scan the parking lot and find an empty one. Eventually, the spots could have some type of tag that could let cars know which spots were empty.
The technology for all of this already exists, it's just a matter of implementing it.
A bunch of cars can auto parallel park. They signal when a spot is available as you're driving (and you tell it you want to park. The car doesn't beep every time it finds a spot all the time....). You stop the car, put it in "auto park" mode, and it does all of the calculations steering and moving on its own. Volvo, Ford, Lincoln, Toyota, Lexus, BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Jeep, and Chrysler all have it on some models.
The BMW i3 can parallel park itself even if you're not in the car, through a smartwatch! Some of the cars can also park in parking spots. For these existing cars, you have to drive the car to the spot, and it will park it from there. It's just a matter of time before it finds its own spot.

Re: If Google Cars were available today...
Sign me up! I don't drive on highways and some really busy roads bc I have anxiety from being in a bad car accident. I honestly would never drive again if this were real lol.
