Reach out to the small business center. I know they have one associated with Farmingdale college. My DH met with them when he was thinking about it.

Re: opening small business in nassau
It depends on type of business and town you are in. Town of Hempstead , town of oyster bay, etc They all have different requirements.
Once you know what town you are looking at, call that town office and ask there first. They should be able to direct you

Is it a home based business or are you looking to open a store/restaurant etc? The zoning laws are different everywhere but if you are going to have to pay rent I would be very careful about signing a lease until you are fairly certain you will be able to cover all of your expenses. Rent in Nassau can be brutal.

thanks - we'll be renting a store front. based on the prices we've seen, it is a fair rental and decent space. we're just unsure about the extra permits that he'll need to operate
