I could not care less what bathroom anyone uses, transgender or not. Bathrooms could be unisex for all I care, I'm in the stall by myself regardless so nobody's infringing on my privacy or vice versa. I think the whole thing is silly. I've used the men's bathroom on occasion when necessary, is that not allowed? I never gave it much thought.

I agree with this. However, I can see why some parents may not be happy about the "locker room" situation at schools if their children (girls or boys) feel uncomfortable changing in front of someone of the opposite sex (physically). I don't think it has to do with thinking anyone is a predator, it will just take some time for it to become the norm.

But what makes a child feel uncomfortable changing in front of someone who is physically of the opposite sex? I'm not sure I understand this fully.

Somewhere between 6 and 8 years old most children are no longer comfortable changing in front of the opposite sex, as they become more aware of their own bodies. That's biology. I was 7 or 8 when I wouldn't allow my father to see me naked anymore. I remember the day, actually, because he was like "but I'm your father.." from the other side of the door and then it clicked in his head and he walked away.

I think these laws are absolutely ridiculous, but when it comes to schools and locker rooms and bathrooms in schools, that's where it's not so black and white for me. I would fear for the safety of a transgender boy in a boys' locker room, but I don't want him in the locker room with my daughter either because she would be uncomfortable, and she has rights too.

I understand that children *do* feel uncomfortable at a certain age, but my question was more about the philosophical why. Is it about sex? Because then what about people/children/teens of the same sex who are gay? Where does that fit in?

Like you said, sending a transgender boy to a boys' locker room is uncomfortable and (potentially) unsafe for that child, too. So perhaps the answer then is to rework locker rooms to allow for stalls and more privacy, rather than forcing children (any children) into situations where they may be uncomfortable.

Of course this is different from the bathroom issue, which is just silly. Even school bathrooms. There are stalls, and the doors close.

When I was in HS, most of the boys were uncomfortable showering/changing in front of ANY person. Gender was irrelevant. For many kids, it's just an uncomfortable activity. Bodies are changing, they "know" that being naked is "bad" (based on many societal rules), they are embarrassed in general, they don't like their bodies, etc, etc...
I still don't like changing in front of other people....

This is totally fair, and I think speaks to our need to revisit and examine locker/change rooms in schools in general, to allow for more privacy.

Am I missing something? I would not want to be in a locker room with a male nor would I want my DD in a locker room with a male. It's okay to have separate facilities for men and women, we are different people and I don't see why a locker room (of all places) should ever have to be unisex. No thanks. I would find that very uncomfortable even now as a 41 yr old woman.

As for the bathroom thing, I'm sure I've been in a bathroom with someone who is transgender and never noticed. I wouldn't bat an eye being in a bathroom with someone who looks like, acts like, and dresses like a woman..............even if they were born male. How would you even know what someone is unless you're doing a genital check at th door??! lol. All that being said, I really wouldn't want a man who looks like a man in the bathroom with me though. I would just feel uncomfortable. Call me crazy but I don't see why having separate bathrooms is all of sudden considered crazy. <shrug>

The "boys" that would be using the girl's locker room would look like girls. They wouldn't look any different from your DD. Wouldn't it be awkward for a "boy" who is transgendered and looks/acts like a girl to have to use the boy's locker room? It's not like they would be running around naked showing all the girls their penis. When I was in school, everyone changed in the bathroom stalls anyway. I never even saw a naked girl.

And who said anything about a man looking like a man being allowed into a women's bathroom? Transgendered people look like the opposite sex, so if a man is in the women's bathroom, that's a whole separate problem. Like you said yourself, you've most likely been in a bathroom with a transgendered person before and never knew.

Re: Surprised I haven't seen this discussed yet - Transgender bathroom bans

People talking about the locker room thing...

I am imagining a TG girl being just like cisgendered girls in the locker room - hovering self consciously as close to the wall as possible and changing under her clothes as much as she is able to. Praying nobody looks at her.Ii mean - it's not like she is going to be strutting around like a porn star showing off her twig and berries when she wished she didn't even have them and ogling the other girls.

And then imagine the abuse she would endure in a boy's locker room.

I know a TG boy in a camp and he stayed in the boys' housing with other boys. He was respected and treated like a boy - but when it came to anything with changing clothes or undressing, he went into a bathroom stall. He was mortified to be seen in any state of undress.

These people are not walking around as sex craved perverts.

They are walking around miserable and depressed and struggling with their identities and the fact that some of them are a shame to their families and possibly homeless as a result of being open with who they are.

They are harassed on the street by strangers. They can be suicidal.

They are not looking at bathrooms and locker rooms as the highlight of their days. They are not looking for hookups on their way to and from taking a crap.

They are people who want to fly under the radar as much as possible and blend in with the crowd. They want people to not be able to tell them apart from the gender they identify with.

They do not appreciate being lumped into the category of rapists, child molestors, or "men wearing a dress so they can get into a women's room". That is so f*cked up. And I feel politicians lately are adding fuel to the fire.

I felt the same, in middle school and high school. I didn't want to change in front of anyone. My school had shower stalls which no one ever used, but I used to duck in there to get at least a little more privacy.

Kids mature at such different rates too, which can also cause discomfort. Locker rooms and bathrooms are separate issues IMO. I have no problem with a trans woman in the ladies room and I probably have shared bathrooms with them without knowing. But I think the locker room issue in schools does need a closer look for the safety and comfort of all kids.

I think in the near future, bathrooms will be designed to just all be single rooms. Like how they have a family room now. Each room would have its own locking door, own toilet and urinal and own sink.

That way there are no issues. You go to your own single room no matter what you are or how you feel. Case closed Chat Icon

Yep it's like that in a lot of restaurants in NYC. Just a bathroom, not men or women. You go in, lock the door and do your thing.
Easy and private

Regarding the bathroom, the "law" or "rule" or whatever you want to call it says you can use the bathroom according to the gender you identify with. So what if you're a guy who doesn't really feel like a guy but you haven't actually started living and looking like a woman yet? He can be in the women's bathroom? That would make me feel uncomfortable, that's why I mentioned it. Obviously if you look like a woman and are in the woman's bathroom nobody would notice. At least I wouldn't.

As for the locker room, I don't know what the answer is. My guess is at the JHS/HS level if you actually have kids who (as an example) were born as a boy but dress and act like a girl they likely wouldn't feel comfortable undressing in front of anyone anyway and would use a stall no matter what in the girls locker room.

When I was in HS, the girls just changed in the open in the locker room. Nobody was naked, everyone had a bra and panties, but you had no choice but to change in the open because there were like 4 stalls and 60 girls in the locker room.

This is what gets me the most about the whole argument. That people supporting these ridiculous laws and the idea that people should use the "right" bathroom to protect kids from pervs have no idea how insulting that is to a transgendered person. Being transgendered does not make a person a pedophile or a pervert. There are so many more important problems in this world than which bathroom a person uses.

The bathrooms dont bother me, but I dont care if anyone gets offended. I think when it comes to changing in the same locker rooms, is getting carried away. I dont have girls, but I would not want my daughter dressing in the same room as a girl with a penis.

They're not taking off underwear in a school locker room so how would they know if she had male parts or not?

Also just wondering what do you think would happen if your daughter got changed next to a transgendered person?

Not directed to you but as a general question- why focus on a transgendered person in a locker room and not a sexual predator. Females can be predators too. Why does having a penis change things? I guess I just don't see what the big deal is. I can't help but think about the boys football team that had some varsity players who sodomized other boys who were on the JV team. They weren't transgendered and I don't even think they were gay. They were still predators in the same changing room as other males. Why aren't people up in arms about that possibility? When Dennis Hastert, a man who molested boys, gets out of prison, he'll be able to go into a bathroom with boys the same age as the ones he sexually assaulted. Why aren't people focusing on that? I don't get it.

I thought they meant it would be easier for a pedophile or perv to dress up as a woman and pass off as transgender to get into the womens bathrooms.

Just something to tHink about, I had to take swimming in HS, so we had to change out of everything!!!! We showered in our bathing suits to avoid some humiliation and it was torture. I cannot imagine a transgender child having to endure that.

I'm sorry, I really feel like there are so many more important things to be dealing with in this country. The fact that bathrooms are getting this much national media attention in my opinion is ridiculous. In all actuality I feel like most transgender men who dress/look like a woman(and vice versa) have been doing so for years and nobody cared. I just feel like there needs to be more attention on way more important matters.

Huffington Post Article

So if this is, in fact, true (because it's the Internet, so who knows), now you have people taking matters into their own hands, which is a scary thing.

Also, what has stopped pedophiles from dressing up like a woman and walking into a bathroom prior to this? Now all of a sudden they're going to come out of the woodwork?

I am no conspiracy theorist but I have to say I agree! I mean, bathrooms are getting more mainstream media attention than Flint and a ton of other things that I consider way more important. Just crazy to me.

I could not be less of a conspiracy theorist. But let's face it- the media is now about ratings and internet hits. They report what people are going to be more likely to look at. I saw a meme which I couldn't find which I think had to do with Social Security and cost of living, which no one was paying attention to because they were fixated on the bathroom issue. It's very disappointing. Real journalism is pretty much dead.

I'm a pretty conservative republican and here's my take

Men will dress as women to violate them.
Women will dress as men to violate them
People will violate you regardless of gender, race, or status.
These are not transgender people. These are a**holes abusing people and the law.
No I don't want my daughter in a restroom with someone who wants to harm her, but if my daughter were transgender or my son transgender I wouldn't want them to be in that position either. We need to remember that while Caitlyn Jenner is the "face" of this, which sucks, it's really a younger generation that is stepping forward. As for locker rooms, they should be stalled and there should be separate areas for any child that feels uncomfortable undressing in a community style. Gay, straight, transgender whatever.

Yup. I agree.

.....

Thank you.. that was very eloquently said.
I can't fathom this whole thing is even a discussion. The fear some people have stems from ignorance and i think the only thing that can change it is to have open discussions about it, all the time.
Look at any great societal issue that we've had to deal with (civil rights, gay rights etc..) only when we all talk about it and the issues and people become more accepted, do things really change for the positive. we hope.

I thought they meant it would be easier for a pedophile or perv to dress up as a woman and pass off as transgender to get into the womens bathrooms.

I thought it was about both- transgendered people being in the bathroom of their gender and men dressing up as women to get into their bathroom?
Either way the whole thing drives me nuts.
