Anyone familiar. I need to take the ferry from new London today. If I hurry I may make it there by 445 for a 5pm boat but it would be really close. I don't know if I should make a reservation for 5 and risk not making it? Make it for 6 and how they'll apply it to the 5 if I get there in time? Not make a reservation and hope for the best either way?

Anyone familiar with how lenient they are with this stuff?

Re: Orient point ferry

They want you there at least 1/2 hour before the time of the ferry
They start loading early.

Make the later reservation and if you get there in time for the earlier one, and there is room on it, they will let you on.
I have done that before several times

make the later reservation. They will let you on the early one if there is room. worst case you wait. either way you wouldn't lose your reservation.

Also check the website to see what boats are for the 5 and 6. if they are big ones you probably won't have an issue getting on without a reservation. Its mid week and not a holiday so they aren't that crazy.

You can go on their website and it tells you how many spots are left open.

If I were you, I would make reservations for the 6 and if you get there for the 5 and they have room they will let you on. As long as you print out your reservation before you go and you don't have to go in and get a ticket, you will be good to go. As long as they haven't pulled away from the dock you can get on. I swear my father has gotten on a few ferries when the boat was moving pulling out...LOL

Re: Orient point ferry

They ask you to be there 30 minutes early, but they want you there 15 minutes beforehand. If there is room, and you get there 5 minutes early, you can still get on the ferry (I know that from several first and second hand stories...) However, I would schedule for a later ferry, and there is often space in standby to get on an earlier ferry, especially in the middle of the week. If you make a reservation for 6, at least you know you're guaranteed that ride over. Best case scenario, you make the 5.

Uuuugggh, just looked and now the 6 is booked. Next boat isn't until 730 and I really don't want to wait for that alone with two kids. Maybe I should just go to Bridgeport but I was trying to avoid rush hour on 95. I usually make it to Bridgeport in 2 hours but I'm guessing that won't happen on a weekday afternoon.

you are coming from up North correct? What I have done when I lived in Boston was just get in my car and make the stop at New London and see if I cna get on....if not jump back on the highway and drive to Bridgeport and see if I could get on from there. Worst case I drove around.

I would do this at holiday time when you had to book forever in advance. I very rarely had to drive the entire way!

Coming from block island. I lucked out and got into an earlier ferry off BI so hopefully I'll miss traffic and Bridgeport will line up better. I'm alone with my two girls so if traffic isn't an issue I prefer knocking out most of the driving in one shot rather than having two long drives. Hopefully we'll get to Bridgeport by 3 now.

I would just take the chance and see if they have any room. It's amazing the way the pack cars on the boat. I have seen cars hanging off the end of the boat. I also am not 100% sure they can completely sell out the boat. They might need to leave a few spots open for drive ups.

They definitely sell out all the tickets. On more than one occasion, I got to the dock early, so I was on the stand-by line. Even being the first one on stand-by, I wasn't able to get on the boat.
