ETA. I don't know why they gave you crap for buying last minute? You bought a gift. I personally just do it so I have more to choose from but I would never give someone crap for waiting last minute.

Depends how close I am to the person. I know with my SIL we tried to buy before invites even went out but people bought stuff before the registry even went to the public and we were SOL. If it's something where we want to spend a certain amount than I usually buy right away. If it's a smaller amount then I wait until I have time to get to the store and I buy a few things that equal up to the amount I wanted to spend. I try to keep with a theme like all bath stuff or all blankets, etc.

Depends on when I have the time. Pre-dd immediately, post dd, sometimes the day of unless it's a group gift.

Right away sometimes even before I get the invite if it is someone I am very close to. I like to make sure I get a good gift and not left overs

My DH always makes fun of me because I buy the gift right away... but like others said I rather have first pick of items because then you are stuck with very little to choose from.

I usually end up buying a gift a few days before the party. If there is nothing left on the registry I just pick out something else I think they would like like. I'm never one to buy gifts very much in advance.

I'm too lazy/disorganized to do it right away but I usually buy it a week or 2 prior, not the day of or the day before

It depends. Now that I predominantly shop online, I usually do it right away. If I'm forced to go to the store, usually it's the day before or the morning of because I'm a major procrastinator.

It depends on a number of factors: how close the person is to me, how much money I have in my pocket at the time, how busy I am at the time, etc. I have bought my gift upon receiving invitations and I've bought my gift on the way to the shower itself.
