Neighbor has issue with my cat -wwyd?

This is a tough situation. I am not a cat person (though we actually do have an indoor cat as well as a dog). However, I can't imagine ever getting really annoyed that a cat was coming into my property. It's just not something that would bother me that much. In fact I used to have that exact situation where our neighbors cat would come into our yard. Our dog would bark and our cat would make crazy howling sounds at it lol. But it wasn't a big deal. And we only took our dog out on a leash so we didn't worry about the cat scratching her or anything.

I'm sorry but I don't really have advice. I kind of agree with the PP who said that this just happens in neighborhoods sometimes. Especially when the houses are close and yards are small like much of LI. I'm not really sure what you can do or what else they could expect you to do.

I have to say I'm pretty shocked at how many people feel there's nothing she can do.

She may be the one SOL if her cat gets attacked, poisoned or hit by a car.

There are things she can do. She can buy an enclosure to keep her cat safe.
I know someone who built one to go around her yard. That way the cats got fresh air but remained safe.

We had an outside cat when I was younger. I saw it get hit by a car outside our house. One of the worst things I ever witnessed.

I too find it odd that people are saying there's nothing you can do...

This isn't a stray feral it's a pet.
Pets are to be kept safe by the owner which means not allowing them to roam neighborhoods freely.
I'm sure my dogs would love to spend the day using our neighborhood as their playground but as a responsible pet owner there's reasons why that can't happen.

animal fights, cars, poisoning, theft by someone..etc.
I would continue to train your cat to be an indoor cat or buy an enclosure if they need to spend the days outside in your yard.

Re: Neighbor has issue with my cat -wwyd?

I am not a cat person at all and my DS is highly allergic. I should also add the people behind us feed about 4 - 6 stray cats in the neighborhood. The houses are not so close here, but the cats still come to my yard just about every day. They jump over our fence. They have put several scratches on our pretty new swing set and even some on our Jacuzzi cover so I am kinda siding with the neighbor here. We have a dog that I keep on a leash and look out for. Since we have a high deck she doesn't bark too much at the cats bc she doesn't look for them so much.

I really don't have an answer, but if there's a way to keep the cat in your yard only try and do that. It shouldn't be the neighbor's responsibility.
I should add my best friend had an indoor/outdoor cat. They had one of those doggy doors so the cat came and went as she pleased. One day they came home and she was severely hurt bc she was hit by a car. May hate being inside, but probably safer.

I've never seen this before. I totally would have gotten one of these back when we had a yard. Though my cat is so afraid of the outdoors I don't even think she'd use it!

Easier said than done I have been trying to keep her in the house all day somehow now she got out and I can't find her now. She must have snuck out when I went to get the mail or something I didn't even see her. I understand that indoor is safest for the cat it's just disappointing because I finally got to a good balance with the cat and I thought everyone was happy lol. I have a 1 and 3 yr old and it was a nightmare to make sure she doesn't escape every time we enter or exit the house. I guess it's a lesson learned I should have just gotten a dog since everyone seems to love dogs but hate cats even though dogs are more work. I found more of the dogs poop on my grass today too by the way Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I don't think it's a matter of preferring one over the other. So many neighborhoods have issues with stray cats, mine included. I choose not to have pets at this time because I have small children and don't have the time to devote to any pet right now. But yet, I go outside and have to hose down my kids' play sets and dry them because cats pee all over it. We have an expensive patio set that I've had to replace the cushions on twice in 3 years because when we go in and out of the house, cats have used them as kneading posts. And yes, we put the cushions away daily. That happened when I brought the kids in for lunch. They also poop all over. If it was stray dogs, I would be just as mad. And your neighbor needs to keep her dog in her yard, too. I would definitely consider and outdoor pen for the cat. Safer for her and less of a hassle than trying to keep her in.

Re: Neighbor has issue with my cat -wwyd?

I sense that you feel ganged up on...I don't think anyone is trying to do anything except offer you opinions and solutions...ftr, I feel every pet owner has a responsibility to keep their pet in their own yard and keep it from pooping in other people's yards. Dogs are more tightly regulated and it's easier to keep them contained than cats, but that shouldn't mean that cat owners can just let them roam free because it's difficult. I think people have offered a few decent solutions, though they are all work on your part. If you are sure your neighbor's dogs are pooping on your lawn, either put out a sign or say something. You are perfectly entitled to.

We've had issues with cats getting poisoned in my area...I think someone was disgruntled about people feeding feral cats, but I know people's outdoor "pet" cats were poisoned that way.

The cat would be much, much safer indoors.
If you let the cat outside everyone will look at it as a feral, which unfortunately means its expendable. Forgetting about the human issues, kitty would be more susceptible to sickness, illness, etc.

You need to be very careful at the door. Our door is only open for a few seconds to either get in or out. No lingering with the door open - not for the pizza guy, delivery, nothing. I step outside to meet the person and close the door behind me. I know exactly where my cat is before I open the door, and if she is close I keep my eye on her the whole time, and I locate her when I close the door. If my door is going to be open for more than 2 minutes with me standing at it, she goes into a different room with the door closed.

As a prior poster mentioned, you can get a catio and try that. Also, hiding and viewing spaces at home. They say there are 2 kinds of cats - tree cats and bush cats. They either want to hide low in a bush, or climb high in a tree so they can survey the land. I would try both to try to make her happy - get a box, turn it over and make a hole so she can get in and out to give her a 'bush' feeling - and then get a cat post, a very tall one with many levels (6 feet plus) so she can have the high feeling. And put it near a window so she can look outside. Make sure she has access to a window she can see outside on every side of your house. So she can 'follow' any activity is happening outside. You can also try some window slings, my cat has 2 of those also, and she loves them and runs from one to the other as she sees action outdoors.

Good luck.

I did not think that at all. I actually thought having outdoor cats was common (at least it was when I was growing up). To me the point of the thread was the specific issue with your neighbor, not whether you were keeping your cat safe Chat Icon

my cat is an indoor/outdoor cat as well. from the first day we adopted her, she bolted out the front and back door as soon as it opens. She mostly sits on my car in the driveway but I am sure she wanders a bit too - I always had indoor cats so this is new to me but it is nearly impossible to keep her indoors with the kids and all, opening the door 100 times a day.

I love cats! You can't help where she goes, sorry. Sorry to your neighbor... she needs to understand.

Isn't there something like wolf urine spray that she could put by her back door or something that cats hate that would keep your kitty away from her back door? And damn those yappy dogs for pooping on your lawn Chat Icon

But why is the neighbor SOL and just "needs to understand" that OP's cat can just go wherever it wants and do whatever it wants, but it's not okay that her dogs pooped on OP's lawn? I honestly don't see the difference. The cat most likely is also going to the bathroom on the neighbor's property as well, and even if it's not, how would OP feel if the neighbor's dogs were always at her door or window instigating her cat? I would bet OP would be complaining that it's not acceptable.

I'm just really not understanding why cats are getting this free pass and so many people think it's perfectly acceptable to allow your PET to do whatever it pleases regardless of how it affects other people on their own property. It seems like irresponsible pet ownership TBH. If the tides were reversed and this was a dog owner, people would be up in arms about how the dog needs to be contained. Chat Icon

Not a cat person at all. My neighbor has a cat who roams. It sends my dog into panic mode. She has been in my yard when I let him out. He came thisclose to getting her one day. He would have destroyed her. Sadly due to his breed HE would be punished because they left their cat out. So either make her an inside cat, or get a chicken coop thing you can keep her in outside.

I also know someone with a german shepard that did catch and kill a cat that got into their yard. SOL for the cat owner.

Re: Neighbor has issue with my cat -wwyd?

Yeah ok. This thread is getting ridiculous.

I also let my dog out when there are small animals on my property that are working my dog into a frenzy. That occasionally includes cats. They usually get the message after being chased by a crazed dog a few times. And btw when my dog gets stressed out she usually pukes on my floor, so it's not just an annoyance, it physically upsets her. IMO She has a right to be comfortable and calm in her own home. She is not permitted to wander onto other people's property, why are cats special? (And that's rhetorical, because they're not special, people just want to think they are)

I am a HUGE cat person and I have to agree that you need to find a way to keep you cat indoors.

There must be info on the internet or books or something that discusses this. How to train a cat to be an indoor cat.
Maybe your vet can assist?

You can't let a cat out if it's your pet. I am putting the neighbor annoyances to the side for just a second and talking strictly health and safety of the cat.

Fleas, ticks, parasites, predators, poison left out for rodents, cars, getting lost- I would be a nervous wreck every single second if my cat was outside at all.

I'd definitely do some research and call your vet. Making your cat an indoor cat is best for everyone. I have to imagine it has been done before.

I'm sorry this is just dumb. SHE should just understand? Bull shit. Keep the cat indoors. I don't want cat shit on my lawn. I don't want a cat peeing on my lawn. Be responsible as a pet owner or don't get a pet. Plain and simple.

This is the exact reason we do not let our cats roam freely outside. Our youngest one came down with a serious infection from something he ate outside when he got out. Not everyone is a cat lover and I wouldn't be surprised what some people may do to a cat they find roaming in their yard. Do yourself a favor and keep the cat indoors. Try using a spray bottle with water if the cat is scratching at the door. Its gotten to the point where all I have to do is lift the bottle up and the cat moves away from the door.

I agree.

The last outdoor cat we had was bitten by another animal on her rear end, and it could have caused severe damage. The bite alone caused an infection that cost $3,000 to fix. She became an indoor cat after that.

Thanks to those who gave honest advice. We are working on keeping her in the house. We have a cat tree, scratching Post etc, plenty of cat toys. For the record I'm not an irresponsible pet owner who doesn't care about other people and their property I just saw how happy she was to be outside it was like I had a different cat so i really didnt see the harm. I was talking to a friend who Suggested getting another cat so she has company. Does anyone know if animal shelters will let a potential cat that you are going to adopt visit with current pets to make sure we get along? Don't need to be breaking up cat fights lol
