I hate this two party political system...
Rhetorical question, but why do we need to still have the two party system? Republicans and Democrats are private organizations that put one candidate each on the ballot, and that candidate isn't even chosen democratically by the populace. The parties are run by big businesses and lobbyists (both parties). It also causes people to have to chose a side, even if they don't agree with large portions of that candidate's ideas.
If we didn't have the two party system, but just a bunch of candidates, everyone could look at each individual's stance on major issues and decide who they think best represents them.
With the current system, most people have one or two topics that they care about, and have to side with the party that supposedly supports those topics, even if they disagree with a huge list of other topics that get lumped in with that party's platform.
Oh, Candidate "A" supports 5 of my "top 10" things I am concerned about... Candidate "B" supports 8 of my top 10, but also supports 8 of my top 10 issues that I despise... Candidate "C" is very closely in line with my pro and con beliefs, so I think I'll back them on Election Day. ... ...
I also think you'd get better qualified candidates if we ditched the Two Party system, and had an actual democratic election (where every vote counts).
I know it won't happen in our lifetime, but it would be nice.....

Completely agree! I also think that some candidates just say "oh yes I am for this/or against that" just b/c of the party they are affiliated with when maybe that's not truly how they feel. They have to "fall in line" with that parties beliefs though. It should all just be a general popular vote which I think would make people really do their homework before they vote for a particular candidate, as opposed to just voting for/against party lines.

The issue is that it is exceptionally expensive to run a national campaign. The organizational structures that the parties have created would cost millions for another party to replicate.

It doesn't have to be, though. If we took some cues from England and similar countries, it would be a shorter campaign time, less money spent slandering opponents, etc. Nobody NEEDS a billion dollars to run for President...
Just because things are done a certain way doesn't mean they are the best way, or need to continue.....
Again, I realize that it's never going to change because companies run this country.... This thread is just my ideas for a more democratic election. It's not based on anything I think will happen.
While we're at it, where's my flying car?....

The DNC and RNC have profiles established for every single voter. They know how to target people and who to call. Even if the length of campaigns were compressed and we all voted on one day for the primaries, the parties and the target info is so valuable. A new party would be hard pressed to replicate it without substantial investment.

In my ideal system, there are no primaries, and absolutely no DNC or RNC. No parties, just candidates.

I never paid a lot of attention to the primaries until this year- and what a ridiculous system it is. Especially on the Democratic side- the way delegates are awarded is laughable.
