Passover Question

I'm sorry if this sound like a stupid question, but someone just told me that part of the Passover preparations is to clean and throw out everything in your home (furniture, electronics, etc.)

Is this true?

Btw, the person that told me this is not Jewish, so I don't know if he's exaggerating or not.

What? No. Not at all true.

Part of the preparations is to clean, but you don't throw everything out. Can you imagine having to buy a new couch and so forth every year?

Re: Passover Question

Some people clean out their kitchens/stock room areas of anything that is not kosher for Passover (bread, pasta, etc.)

That's what I said too! But he insists. He works for the sanitation dept and says that tons of stuff gets thrown out like furniture, etc. Could this possibly happen in Orthodox Jewish communities?

People clean out non kosher food for Passover. Not EVERYTHING in the house. Depending on how religious you are is the level of how much you throw out :)

Passover Question

Not true at all. I know many Orthodox & Lubavitch families and they do not get rid of furniture. Just clean the entire house/car very well.

Re: Passover Question

First I am jewish, second I have extremely religious orthodox family members. What was told to you is not true at all. You are supposed to do a spring cleaning, dusting, vacuum, things like that. You don't throw out your furniture. That is insane.

Re: Passover Question

I think I know the confusion.

So, before Passover you "sell" all your chometz to someone who is not Jewish. You usually do this through your synagogue. The items don't physically leave your house, but you cannot use them and they do not belong to you. After Passover, you "buy" it back. I bet this is what the person was referring to, without having the knowledge of what actually occurs.

Throwing out all your furniture is just absurd.

My guess this is the reason for the confusion. The first time I was told by an orthodox co-worker about this I didn't fully understand until he really explained it to me.

If you "sell" chometz, it has to leave the house... Orthodox Jewish women spend months hunting for crumbs - they're not going to put an entire loaf of bread in a corner lol.
