If they planned on slaughtering the cow, it should not have a name, or have been brought to Birthday parties. My friend has chickens. They have names and she posts pictures of them on fb. If she decided to eat one of them I'd be horrified.
I do agree with the naming thing. They post pictures of Minnie on their FB page. There is one wishing her an almost Happy 2nd Birthday. They have used this cow as part of the "marketing" so to speak for the farm, to encourage people to visit the farm. So *I* can certainly see how some people would be upset. I think the protesting, threats, etc. are all absolutely ridiculous though!
This is how I feel about it too. I give credit to working farms and farmers. They are within their rights. No issue there. But I guess I can totally see why people would be sad. I saw the social media posts when they first got Minnie, and yes, I think by naming an animal, saying how much you love her, kids meeting her - people form some sort of attachment , right or wrong.
I personally could never ever ever get a cow or chicken and name it and all and then eat it. I just couldn't. I would form such an attachment, even if that was not my intention. I wonder if it's hard for farmers but I guess it's something they get used to.
I think this did open the eyes of many. I'm not educated much on farming, but if I went somewhere and saw a farm animal with a name and a little following, I just wouldn't think it would be used to eat by the family after a certain time. I would just think it's like a family pet, enjoyable for visitors.. Now I guess I know.
I think they are within their rights to do as they intended... But I'm still saddened over it. I never should have looked at the pics of that cute little cow. I do wish they would maybe take the financial offering that was extended to them and maybe save her. And then maybe not name or assign some sort of pet-like personality to a future animal that is intended for dinner. Maybe each side can learn something from this. That's just my personal opinion - and I know and admit it's skewed because I would love to see the cow be saved. I can't even kill spiders though.
Many people love their farm and they are long-standing in the community. I don't think this will hurt them, but bring in more visitors. I do not think they are bad people at all. I give them credit for farming. I know it's no easy task. But I'm not surprised in the least that people are saddened. I fall into that category, although I wouldn't protest.
ITA with this too
I guess my thing is - its one thing to treat it humanely, but it's another to go out of their way to basically make it a pet, which is what they did IMO. If the plan is to kill and eat it, don't treat it like a family pet.
Sorry but this is ridiculous. Just because the animal has a name doesn't make it a pet. They are a working farm, they've never hid the fact that they raise animals for food. Nobody has any right to take issue with what they are doing, they are farmers. They never claimed to be a petting zoo.
Obviously I'm biased because I liked it and agreed with it, but I'm not sure how anyone can call this post "ridiculous."
One of the reasons I quoted it is that it is clear that the poster was internally struggling with the fact that the farm didn't do anything "wrong."
I thought it was a measured, thoughtful response to something that logically and inevitably invokes a emotional reaction in some people.
EMV made it clear that she's not standing in front of their farm with a sign, chanting.
Not everything is black and white.

LI farm introduces cow to community, but now says she's dinner
A common statement has been they shouldn't have named the cow/let children pet it if this were the end result. How should this cow have been treated then? With indifference? Locked in a barn? No human interaction at all? I'd say this cow had a decent life and now it is serving the purpose this family intended it to have.
There is so much outrage about the quality of life of cows in slaughterhouses. This cow had a great life, and the people protesting are still up in arms.

And a good number of them are probably doing so while wearing leather shoes.

This protest is ridiculous. We should all hope the meat we buy at the grocery store was treated as well as the Benners treat their animals.
I am delayed (haven't been on here in a while) but I totally agree!
Bob Benner was my teacher in HS and I have been to the farm - not a lot, but for a number of years and enough to know that they are a great family and their working farm is a great education tool. This family is full of educators and GREAT ones at that.
