Possible cicada swarms this year
The 17-year cycle cicadas are due this year, and they are forecasting that we may get some.
http://www.newsday.com/long-island/suffolk/17-year-cicadas-may-emerge-in-june-in-suffolk-experts-say-1.11706331
They are the 17-year cicadas — billions of insects, now underground and due to emerge en masse most likely starting next month.
The nymphs are expected mostly in limited areas of Ohio and West Virginia. But, experts say, there is also the potential in June for their arrival in a snippet of Suffolk County.

Possible cicada swarms this year
Didn't this just happen in recent years? It can't have been 17 years since the last one?

Yuck. They are so gross!!!
ETA - Are these a different type of cicada bug because I remember cicadas every summer as a kid. They were so loud and they use to attach to our wooden fence until they "hatched" from their little shells.

Yes! I just said this to DH a few days ago. I distinctly remember one being on his shoulder one time and I have not known him for 17 years so how the heck can be be getting another swarm already?!?

Possible cicada swarms this year
They said this was going to happen in 2013 and while it happened in other places, it didn't swarm here. I remember it being the summer between 6th and 7th grade for me, which is around the 17 year mark since the last huge swarm. The kids on the block and I used to pick them up and keep them on our clothes as pets. Lol. So they don't scare or bother me, but I have family members that may have small heart attacks if they blindly fly into them.

I read about this last night and then dreamed that they were everywhere and you couldn't walk without them flying into you.

Re: Possible cicada swarms this year
Different species of cicada have different dormant periods. There are 190 species and sub-species in the US. Some are annual, and some lie dormant for 2 to 17 years. It's the short period cicadas that most of us remember in recent history.

ditto. I don't get why people hate them so. Their life cycle is so amazing. I'd take them over mosquitos any day any swarm any summer!
I can't WAIT !!! I used to love looking at their shells and wondering how life would be underground for so long. The detail on them is awesome.
