Lease turn in aggravation, what can be done?

DH leased a Kia and turned it in two months early to lease a Jeep. The Jeep dealer gave us a credit for the two remaining payments, we knew we would be on the hook for a disposition and early termination fee. We turned the car into the Jeep dealer the day we leased the new car and they said they would bring it over to the Kia dealer. They gave us a sheet that stated what the mileage was on the car was when we turned it in and checked off a box that there was no damage. Well the other day we get a bill from Kia finance and it was a lot more than we expected. DH called them up and after being on hold for 40 minutes finds out that part of the charge includes $250 for taking the tire and jack... we never touched the items! They said they had a third party take pictures that shows the tire and jack were missing. DH was livid and asked for a supervisor, for which he left a message, but I doubt he is going to get a call back. At this point what can we do? I can take ownership for scratches and other fees but I just hate that we are being billed for something we clearly didn't do. Everyone I've talked to that has ever turned in a lease never has had a problem like this so I guess I just wasn't thinking I had to do a full photo inspection before turning it in.

How long ago did you turn the car in? The leasing comany is supposed to send you notice within a certain time frame and you have the right to fight it. We had something similar happen but they ended up re-selling the car off before they even notified us so when I said I wanted to challenge it - they didn't have the car anymore so they had no choice but to dismiss it.

Most cars come with the jack and tire. Does your DH ever remember seeing them there in the first place?

Do you think Jeep took the items? If not; its going to be hard to prove one way or the other since you really don't know?

Maybe if you get someone on the phone at Kia; ask if they can work with you? Maybe they eat 1/2 and you pay the rest???

Every time I have turned vehicles in; I always make sure I am there when the car is inspected to ensure no "hidden" fees.

We turned the car in end of February, two months before the lease was due.. I am hoping we can fight it but at this point I'm not very hopeful..

DH never had to use them but I would imagine the car would have came with it... I don't know if something happened between when Jeep drove the car to Kia or if Kia took the items and then said they were missing just to get more $... now I know for next time, lesson learned..

That's the risk in not personally returning the car yourself. I'd chalk it up to a lesson learned.

This happens often in the industry unfortunately. You need to (in the future) take your own pictures with a time stamp to prove the condition of the vehicle when you leave it at whatever dealership you turn it into be it the actual dealer you leased it from or not. Because you cant prove that the tire and jack were in the car when you left it at the Jeep dealer, you will probably be on the hook for the $250. You can try contacting the Jeep dealer and fighting it out with them, but I doubt you will get very far.

I'm sorry but I think that's completely ********… It seems like all these companies and everything can rip you off left and right and you never know the difference… But then you're just supposed to have it be a lesson learned and somehow it's your own fault… I'm sorry, but that's just wrong. No one should have to worry that a company is taking advantage or scamming customers. No one should have to do a full CSI investigation and full report as a customer.

Also… I feel like a lot of cars nowadays do not come with the Jack and tie e anymore… I thought it was something that stopped… And now they just give you a fix-it kit to fix a tire in the meantime ?I feel like they started doing that to increase fuel efficiency

I would fight it…I've been jerked around by a couple creepy businesses lately and I know it's aggravating.

OP - Google the make and model and year of your Kia. I was looking online and it seems many newer models don't even come with a spare tire.

Good luck

Can you clarify what you mean by "this happens often in the industry unfortunately." ? Do you mean dealerships who take advantage of customers? Because that's kind of how this reads, whether you intended or not. Not blamimg you or anything, just curious.

Apologies- I didn't intend for it to come off that way. Some dealerships, unfortunately, will do things similar to that though. Luckily enough, I now work at a dealership that prides itself in NOT partaking in practices such as this. I have worked for stores in the past where cars will be hit on their lots (not purposely) but they don't say anything because "its just a lease return" and then the customers end up in situations such as this. There will always be dealers that are looking to take advantage. The consumer just needs to find the ones that are more reputable and that actually care about their reputation and maintaining customer retention.

And the PPs are right. Most newer cars come with inflator kits not spare tires. They are mostly purchased as accessories now.

Kia sucks. I leased with them and they screwed me over big time. When it was time to return the car I called an independent third party over to inspect it- they did and a report was sent directly to Kia Finance. The independent inspector told me that Kia dealerships will often try to screw you. I returned my lease to the Kia dealership the following day and they couldn't say anything against the report. I then picked up my new car leased from a different dealership. Not a Kia. I didn't trust them to do this for me either. I'm sorry this happened to you !

If you turned the car into the other dealer and you have a signed piece of paper from them stating that the car was in good condition then call up the new dealer and have them deal with it. We lease cars all the time and always return them early and unless there is significant damage, like the bumper falling off, then the new dealer takes care of it.

I do have a paper stating the mileage and that the car was not damaged but I am afraid they are going by this "third party inspection" which supposedly took pictures of the missing spare tire/jack.

I did google the year/model of car it according to edmunds it appears the 2013 model which we had, is supposed to come with it (Looks like the 2014 does not).

A friend of mine told me to send in the amount we were billed, minus the $250 with a letter stating we did not take the items but I really don't want to hurt my credit or go into collections over $250.

In any case because of this experience, I will tell everyone I know to stay far far away from Kia and this particular dealer.

ask to see the car or that you want your own inspection done. Thats what I did and all of a sudden they backed off because they didnt have the car anymore. And it is a law that you have the right to inspect the car yourself if they are charging you for something after turn in

The dealership where you got the new car from really has no part in getting rid of your old lease. You should of made that transaction with the lease company to get the car grounded. Don't trust the dealership for anything as they will make something routine, a big headache.

They can say anything and you will be happy but they are not the one, inspecting it, etc...
