Talk to me about Coconut Oil

I hear everyone talking about it and know nothing about it. What do you use it for? Just for cooking?
Is it really a healthy alternative?
I was at the store and was considering buying it, but then there's refined and unrefined. Chat Icon
I was lost! LOL!

Is it worth buying? I cook healthy for the most part for the family.

Thanks!

Re: Talk to me about Coconut Oil

It has a TON of saturaed fat if you look at the label- which put me off. But then I did some research and it seems it's not a bad kind of saturated fat.
If you google you will see what I'm talking about.

Refined will have no flavor at all.
Unrefined will taste and smell like coconut.

Both are the same health wise. It's just if you are cooking something like eggs where you don't want a coconut flavor, go for refined.
ETA-it's great for making popcorn!

Re: Talk to me about Coconut Oil

it becomes solid at room temperature. so don't be shocked if it's a big chunk inside the jar.

i use it very little for cooking. there are a few vegan dishes that call for coconut oil that i love.

i mostly use it for "beauty."
i use it in my hair and on my skin.
it's an amazing moisturizer.

Yes, just like NervousNell said saturated fat is not really bad bad for u like ppl used to believe, I actually read about it on an article a little while ago.

There are many ways to use it. Cooking, on ur skin, I use it on my baby's skin, some moms use it also as a rash cream, natural treatments for ur hair, to reduce the intensity of essential oils when applied to the skin, etc

If u end up buying it, make sure u get one that is extra virgin, and organic.

SO many uses. Body moisturizer, hair mask, eye makeup remover, gargle (oil pulling), lib balm, shaving cream, massage oil......

I bought recently from Amazon. Read the reviews (over 15k) here

Dh buys it by the spackle bucket full so I'd say we use it a lot lol. We use refined. We use it for cooking. We make eggs with it daily and use it for other cooking and some baking. I keep some in the bathrooms and put it on the girls and myself as a moisturizer. Keeping it in the shower keeps it a little softer so I can just grab some, melt it between my hands, and apply to wet skin. Then you can rinse a little so you're not greasy. So much nicer than putting on lotion after a shower or the girls' baths.

Talk to me about Coconut Oil

I buy it from trader joes because it's usually the cheapest and I believe it's unrefined. I've used it as moisturizer, diaper cream, treatment of cradle cap, in baths, and I've baked with it. It's extremely versatile.

In addition to what the others have listed, I have also used it on my dogs to help with heat spots, rug burn and a healing cut.

The most important point that hasn't been mentioned is it's extremely high cooking temp. If olive oil gets too hot it turns rancid or bad somehow, I forgot. But not coconut oil, it smells like heaven. I use it to make eggs, add to smoothies, and cook fried rice or my cauliflower rice.

When my dad had cancer we added to his smoothies. It's has fatty chain acid and omega acids. My mom friend's husband has alheizmers and she started to give him coconut oil daily and it seems to help "keep him" a bit longer. New research is coming out on how it relates to the disease too.

I also slather it on my body straight from the jar. Use it on your teeth to whiten them. I use on squeaky hinges in my house AND it repels bugs. So no need for wd40 a chemical. I buy at Costco a giant vat. Always raw and organic. Trader joes has smaller sized which is great too. I love it!

Eta - best body scrub ever! Organic sugar, melt coconut oil, a bit of almond or jojoba oil and essential oil of your choice. The coconut oil hardens a bit so it holds it all together but melts at 74 degrees. So perfect for the shower. But caution it gets slippery.

It's awful - but olive oil at very high temperatures takes on carcinogenic properties. :agh: (this according to many leading cancer researchers)

On coconut oil, I go through it like crazy - all for skin hydration. Nothing better on my skin…..I can still feel the hydration hours later. Also - my 9 month old son has never had anything even remotely akin to a diaper rash - - - he just gets a thin coating of coconut oil on the entire diaper area with every change. (I'm pretty sure that by 9 mod old, DS1 had a number of rashes - and gone through a decent amount of ButtPaste or Desitin…..never used either on DS2 so far!)

Re: Talk to me about Coconut Oil

I previously used coconut oil to make my ds scrambled eggs in the morning, though since switched to avocado oil.

I use coconut oil to make my homemade deodorant. Been using it for like 3 years now and it's better than anything store bought I ever tried, plus no chemicals.

I use virgin/unrefined.

Would you mind sharing the recipe for the deodorant? I'd love to use a natural approach but the store bought ones made me stink lol

Sure! It's so easy. I keep mine in a Tupperware container and dab a little on with my finger. I tried a bunch of the store bought natural ones.... Nothing compares. This works like a charm. There's no going back for me.

1/4 cup baking soda
1/4 cup cornstarch
5tbsp coconut oil

I improvise and add more coconut oil than it asks for while I'm mixing it all together just because I prefer a creamer texture. Here's a link that tells about it. Deodorant recipe

I keep it in a tupperware container and apply with my my finger. I just take a small amount and rub it on. It fights smell well, as for dryness, I still sweat....not a ton.. But don't get smelly. Perhaps if you use a higher ratio of cornstarch it would help that more, but not sure since it isn't really an issue for me. I just don't wanna smell Chat Icon

Talk to me about Coconut Oil

Honestly I find coconut oil to be way to greasy to use as any kind of moisturizer. I'm in the minority but I don't like it and kind of think it's a fad that will go away in a few years.

No I agree. I find that it's just hard to work with- it' gets so hard and flakes all over when you are trying to get it out of the jar - reminds me of a big tub of Crisco Chat Icon

And then my skin is greasy, but not really moisturized. It's back to being dry and itchy in a few hours.

And forget it for hair- if I even attempted to put that in my hair my hair would be a flat greasy mess for weeks!

Kopari makes a coconut balm, that is supposed to have the benefits of coconut oil with less grease and better absorption. It's pricey though, and I can't bring myself to spend it

Try putting it on in the shower. At the end of my shower I rub some between my hands to melt it a bit and then rub it on. I try to stand out of the water while applying and for s minute or so after and then do a quick rinse before getting out. This way I'm sealing in moisture before my skin ever gets a chance to dry out and I don't feel greasy at all. Same worth my girls' baths.

Talk to me about Coconut Oil

I use it as a facial cleanser - I mix equal parts coconut oil and baking soda in a little jar and use it in the shower. I love it.

I also cook with it and once in a while have a spoon of it because it tastes good.

I do not see the hype surrounding coconut oil. I don't see it miracle curing all these ailments people claim it does. I have very bad psoriasis on my hands and nails and it hasn't helped. I put it on my hands sure they feel nice but it doesn't even last. I do use it as an eye makeup remover...
