Re: Are thank you cards still necessary
For a wedding, shower, a gift for a new baby, to family members who send my DD a gift for her birthday, yes.
But I have NEVER received a thank you note for any kiddie birthday party my DD has attended. Never once.

For a 5th birthday party? My opinion is no. I think thank you cards a little out of control at this point and they feel like an obligation most of the time. I feel like a verbal thank you in person means so much more than a card that someone felt forced to write. I only think thank you cards should be sent for weddings and showers where you can't always personally thank someone.

Re: Are thank you cards still necessary
It depends. Is this more of a family party or is it a kids party with children from school? If it's the latter, then I think it's completely unnecessary and DS has never once received a thank you from a child's birthday party. If it was more of a family party with the parents' friends and family, then yes, I would do thank yous.

Re: Are thank you cards still necessary
They are absolutely necessary. If I don't teach my daughter now that when someone chooses a gift for you you thank them, when will I teach her??
At most of these kid birthday parties as soon as you walk in the door the party host grabs the gift and shoves it in a big bag for the birthday kid to then take home. There is no acknowledgement of the gift. If someone took the time to select a gift and come to my party the least my kid can do is send a thank you.

I always put a generic card in goody bag saying thank you for sharing my special day with me...etc. I think that is fine
I think this is fine especially for a 5th bday party. I would not take offense if I didn't get a TY card after.

Yes. I always send thank you cards for DS birthday. Now he's old enough to help me write them too.
sometimes its just a photo card with a printed thank you message but I still send them.

Re: Are thank you cards still necessary
i think that's enough of a thank you.
I never open gifts at parties, so once DS opens his gifts, when we see the person next we say thank you for the actual gift once again. or we send pictures of DS playing with the toy or at the event.
I also post a generic message on my FB or reply to the evite I originally sent thanking everyone for coming.
Unless it's a picture card, i just toss them as soon as I read them so i see no point.

Yes. My 5 year old needs to learn to be more appreciative so I made him write his name on every single thank you card we gave out. I wrote it out & he signed his name.

That is true. I agree. Most of the time the host doesn't even know you gave a gift until they get home & open everything since the gift are taken by the party attendant. A little thank you card after the party makes the gift giver feel good.

Are thank you cards still necessary
Nope. Not for a run of the mill birthday party. Weddings, showers, 1st birthday, 16th, all yes. My kid's 5th birthday at bounce u, lol, no. That's just my opinion. Unnecessary. And we maybe get one thank you for every 5 we attend. Maybe I'm just from a rude neighborhood, lol. I very graciously thank guests as they leave and I really think it's enough

I think its not necessary and I could care less if I get a thank you card for a gift I've given.

I think it's interesting that so many of you have not received thank you notes for kids' parties. We have received one for almost every party for both of my kids.

I agree!! I thank them when they handed us the gift again when they left and the favor had a thank you. I see no reason why they need a card they are good not to throw out to say thank you again.
I never get why people get all upset about not getting thank your!

Re: Are thank you cards still necessary
DD just had a small surprise party (5 girls) and I made her write thank yous. We always have. I have been to larger parties where the goody bag/favor has a thank you attached which is a nice thought.
For me the good think about a personal thank you note is that it lets me know the giver got my gift. Especially at some of these whole class parties, I'd hate for the birthday kid to think my kid didn't give a gift. A thank you lets me know the gift was definitely opened and received.

Are thank you cards still necessary
Guess I'm in the minority. I kinda think it's rude not to acknowledge a gift that's been given. If it's opened in front of you, and you are thanked at that point, totally acceptable to skip ty card... But like someone mentioned, if a gift is shoved in a bag without acknowledgment, I absolutely think a ty card is necessary. I personally go out of my way to find the perfect gift for the child and it's rude to not be thanked. I think that's what is wrong with this world now... No one cares like they used to. It's really sad.
