Cobra question
What happens if you go to a doctor after you lose your employer medical coverage but before you've signed up for cobra or paid the cobra premium? It's my understand that cobra coverage doesn't kick in until they receive your first premium payment. So if I incur medical expenses before that will they reimburse me retroactively?

Re: Cobra question
i believe your coverage is good to the end of whatever month you are in.
so if you got laid off or left 4/5 you are covered for that month, and then you would have paid for cobra for the following month.
I think. b/c i remember when I left my job after DS was born, I left 8/10 and I was covered through end of august and had the option to do cobra for after that.

Cobra question
I'm pretty sure you have 30 days to elect COBRA coverage. If you need medicos treatment within that 30 days you can pay fans the coverage will be retroactive

Cobra question
I believe you have 30 days to elect COBRA and then 45 days to pay for it. You are covered that whole time.

Re: Cobra question
I am not in HR but from my experience, it is up to the employer if they want to cover you until the end of the month. Some will and some won't. You have a period of time to elect cobra but unless you do, if you receive medical care in between, it is in your dime. If you elect cobra within the 60 day period, you will be covered retroactively but you will have to pay the premium retroactively. If you don't elect it within the timeframe, you will not be covered from the day you lost benefits. Can anyone confirm? Example- if I leave my job April 5th and my benefits terminate immediately and I go to the dr may 5th, I can pay out of pocket for the viisit or I can elect cobra which will retroactively cover me from April 5th but I have to pay the April premium and May premium within 45 days.

Cobra question
it does become retro active for the time you were suppose to be covered. Do not pay the bills if the Dr sends them to you, tell them you are waiting for Cobra to kick in, they will resubmit once Cobra is paid.

Re: Cobra question
cobra is definitely retroactive to the date your coverage ended. Just be mindful of your election and payment due deadlines.
