Wisdom Teeth Question - Is extraction necessary?
My wisdom teeth are not impacted. They grew in and are not causing me any issue; I'm in my early 30s. Every time I go to the dentist though they encourage me to get them removed. Is this really necessary? I'd prefer to avoid having oral surgery if it is unnecessary. I make sure to be very diligent about cleaning those teeth as these always comment on them. I also do not want to wait and then have a huge issue arise due to it. Both my in-laws have their wisdom teeth and my brother has his.

If you're not having any issues, I would leave them be, Does the dentist say why you should have them removed?

Wisdom Teeth Question - Is extraction necessary?
It's not the regular dentist call to make. It's an oral surgeon who would really make the call. If they came in and you have no pain.. Leave them IMO.

Mine are in too, no problems. No reason to remove them unless they're causing problems. I wouldn't just have elective removal.

I agree with everyone else. IF they're impacted thats another story, get them fixed. However, if they're not and they're not moving your other teeth, keep them.
People have enough problems later in life iwth keeping all their teeth, seems like you should hold onto as many as possible!

They say they should be removed since debris can easily get stuck there and they are hard to clean.

Re: Wisdom Teeth Question - Is extraction necessary?
I have 3. I only had one removed because it had a really deep cavity in it. They tried filling it, but it was really too deep and they don't do root canals on wisdom teeth so they recommend I have it removed.
I still left it in though, but then i was having a molar extracted on that same side so I said hey since I'll be numb anyway, just take that bad wisdom tooth out too.
My other 3 or in fine and not causing issues.
No need to fix something that isn't broken IMO
In fact, my DH's dentist actually put a CROWN on his back wisdom tooth. He isn't a fan of extracting them. He said it can sometimes cause more issues than good.

Re: Wisdom Teeth Question - Is extraction necessary?
I would not remove them. In fact my dentist encourages keeping them if they are not impacted. I had to remove one because of a partial impact. I would look for a new dentist.

I'm actually looking for a new dentist, but for a different reason. Thanks!

Re: Wisdom Teeth Question - Is extraction necessary?
There are reason for removal even if they are not impacted
They could be pushing on hhe other teeth, there could be gaps and food/liquid are getting in and no brush or floss will help that and hat could lead to cavities of that tooth and the tooth next etc
Now after saying all that if they are not bothering you inwould not be in a rush to remove them

That's not entirely true. The dentist is the one exam if why they need to be removed. If there is decay in them,he/she is he one looking for that. Not the oral surgeon

This is more or less what they have told me. At some point, they *could* potentially be an issue.
Right now, I am not having it done because I am still nursing my toddler and want to be able to take pain medication if I need it! I will revisit getting them extracted later.
I might also run it past my uncle who is an oral surgeon. I just do not see him very frequently.
I had another tooth extracted last year and the oral surgeon didn't even mention my wisdom teeth.

I always say that. My dad has all his wisdom teeth and he is in his 70s. Never an issue. If there is nothing going on, leave them. I feel like they get kick backs from the oral surgeon they refer you to for saying - yeah get them out get them out. I used to tell my dentist straight up-" i'm not getting them out. Next!"

Re: Wisdom Teeth Question - Is extraction necessary?
even when mine were impacted the dr was like if they are not bothering you leave it.
I did eventually have them removed b/c they did start to bother me, and after I had orthodontic work as an adult, the dentist felt it would start shifting my teeth.
so I had them taken out.
but honestly, if they are not infected and not bothering you, i would totally leave it.

Re: Wisdom Teeth Question - Is extraction necessary?
I have all of mine.. grew in and not impacted (i'm 41).
My dentist never even mentioned having them out at all... she's just always advised to be diligent in making sure I brush all my teeth well, including them (and I don't find them 'harder' to reach to brush...).
If it ain't broke... don't fix it.

Wisdom Teeth Question - Is extraction necessary?
My dentist must have told me 300 times to get them removed starting when I was a teenager.
Never had a problem with them.
I moved and got a new dentist who says there's no need to remove them if they aren't causing issues.
I for one don't believe in taking teeth out for no reason!

Kind of like removing your appendix or your gallbladder when they aren't bothering you because they MIGHT cause an issue later on in life!

Re: Wisdom Teeth Question - Is extraction necessary?
I was in the same boat as you.. I went to a few different dentists in my 20s and early 30s with mixed recommendations. Some PUSHED for it, some said "eh if they aren't bothering you..."
Then.. at 35 I got a terrible infection back there on top of the little piece of tooth that had partially broken the gum. It was the worst pain I've ever felt... (and I've had 2 c-sections!). Oddly enough, 3 months later, DH got the same infection and felt the same way. Within the next few months we both got them removed. The extraction and recovery is MUCH more difficult in your 30s than your teens and 20s... so I wish I had done it earlier.

Re: Wisdom Teeth Question - Is extraction necessary?
I just went to an oral surgeon today because i thought i needed a wisdom tooth out. He told me as long as there not impacted, they are functional and you are in no pain, there is no reason to take them out.
