mixed emotions
DS's most recent training is almost over. he should be done the last week of april. he's been asked to give his wish list of places to be stationed.
i would love nothing more than for him to explore the world. one of the options at his fingertips is japan. he's been wanting to visit japan since he was about 8.
at the same time, the world is so unsafe that i want to put him in my pocket and never let him out and just have my best friend close to me forever... but i know that's not exactly healthy lol but i am a mom, ya know
he has informed me that his first choice is to be stationed in camp pendleton.
that puts him at about an hour's drive from where i live. yay, so happy. but i don't want him to feel that he still has to stay attached to my apron strings.
i want him to stay and i want him to go.
why did no one ever tell me that this parenting business isn't easy and it never ends.
i miss him so much.

Re: mixed emotions
I never knew the hardest part of growing up was watching my kids grow up. I never understood parents lamenting the different stages of life until the teen years hit. Now I get it.
On a side note, I think Japan would be amazing.

I don't know how it works for other branches (I cant recall if your son was Marines or Navy), but in the Army you're usually only stationed someplace for about 2 years at max. So, maybe for the first time it'll be good for him to test the waters and be stationed close to you, but if he gets to choose again in a few years then he can try someplace overseas.

he's a Marine. and this is exactly what he has said and what his thought process is. he would really LOVE to be able to come home for the occasional weekend and just be able to hang out every so often.
he's 21 and of course an adult. just until the day he went off to basic training, he was still my little boy. since that morning when they picked him up, he's grown up so damn quickly. he's such a MAN now. lol

mixed emotions
That's awesome either way. Hope he gets it.
I keep telling AJ to pick her school but nowhere in Texas. I tell her "Mama loves to travel" which isn't untrue "so you need to go to school somewhere far". LOL I love her to pieces but I'm trying to seed the idea now that I want her to fly far and wide.
I see so many here who have never left the state. Mostly those born here and those of us who are military or those who moved here just can't understand it. There's so much to see, why do you *want* to stay where you started. It's called a starting point. I can be the finish line too but there's so much in the middle.
I'm anxiously looking forward to stressing out about having her far from me. If that makes any sort of mixed emotion sense. Right now she wants to go to either Caltech or Harvard. Um, ok? Nice to have goals. I once mentioned she could go to school overseas even in High school and now her head is already turning. LOL

exactly!! my parents came to the US from different countries. my maternal grandmother was a single-mom (in the early 1960's), who did not speak english and she realized there was more to the world than the rural lands where she was born and raised. my paternal grandfather (in the late 1950's) did the same thing with his family. if they would have been scared to move, i would not exist.
for quite some years, people called me a gypsy!!
the world is a little scary right now, but it's an amazing place... EXPLORE.
good for you to start sowing the seeds early!!
