question for those who lease their car...

I am toying around with the idea of leasing a new car. I've always purchased my cars brand new in the past. How does it work with a lease -- i see offers online for certain models at a certain price. If you go into the dealership and decide to pick a car that has a few more options that what is listed in the lease add do they typically work with you and lease out those vehicles, or do they push you to buy? If they do work with you are you just expected to pay the difference in the price of the car divided out over time? TIA

Re: question for those who lease their car...

We saw a lease deal online that we liked. When we got there, we decided we wanted the truck to have navigation- which the one offered in the deal did not. The navigation was offered in the next model up.

So we told the dealer and he was able to get us that next higher model for less than $20 more a month.

They will work it out with you...you'll just pay a bit more than the deal offered online or in the paper, etc

Usually the upgrades are part of the next "package." I'm not sure if this is just for leased cars or all cars that are not factory-order. For instance, we wanted the auto liftgate so we went up to the package that had liftgate, navigation, and something else (I forgot). We could either put the 1K (I don't recall the exact price, but in the ballpark of this) down up front to make the monthly payments identical or divide it over the 36 payments.

They usually get you what you want or very close to your number. Just stay firm. We went in told them what we want and told them what we could afford. I got them to pay off my van, and give me heated seats and a back up camera. They came back with an offer of $50.00 more than what I could afford, then after saying we were going to go and think about it and look at other dealerships he went back again and came back $10.00 more than I stated. We said ok and got what we wanted. Chat Icon

The paper is usually the base model with very little miles allowed per year... so if you want more miles and/or upgrades it will cost you more per month

Thank you all -- this is very helpful! I absolutely loathe buying cars. I've been through the process enough times to know that drill and know how to work the system well enough not to feel ripped off. With a lease im scared of walking in blind and getting taken!

We just recently got our first leased vehicle and after the whole process we felt a little swindled. I was telling someone about the experience and they mentioned using an auto broker. They negotiate for you and you don't pay a fee. I don't have one to recommend but I bet they know all the tricks the dealerships try so it might be worth looking into.

Be careful with Brokers. While, yes they are helpful, they ALWAYS charge a fee whether you know it or not. The ones we work with charge $1000 and its packed into the deal and we pay them after the customer leaves.

OP- I work at a dealer, feel free to FM me with any questions. Just be careful with advertised prices. They always require tax, dmv, fees, and a substantial down payment to reach those payments.

With leasing you'll want to know what money factor they are giving you (like interest) and what the residual of the car is. You can find numbers to compare to on websites like edmunds.

We didn't lease but I will tell you they won't push you to buy. We bought our car and we had such a hard time, they kept pushing the lease!! Kept saying we could get a new car every 3 years and we don't have to worry, etc. This was at more than 1 dealer. I've never had such a hard time to buy a car, it was crazy. The guy told us 95% of their business is lease. He said no one wants to buy anymore, even if they can afford it, because everyone wants a new car every few years. They thought we were nuts wanting to buy.

Yeah cuz they know they'll sell a lease after it gets brought back and they'll make money on it twice

Sorry I always hate the haggling process and the numbers game

That being said yes I do lease a truck and after much negotiating we are paying what we wanted to pay

I always go to one dealership get numbers. Then go to a second and lie and say well this dealer ship told me xxx maybe $75 less than they really did. Then I wait around an hour or so for them trying to get approval to match it!

Also go w a male. I hate to say it but the few times I went alone they quoted me so much. Like do you think I am stupid?
