Have not baptized your child yet?

My husband was raised Catholic and we are not baptizing our children. We both do not believe in organized religion.

We both are Catholics but do not practice. We haven't baptized our dd simply bc I know I wouldn't be able to truthfully agree to all the statements you must make for your child at baptism. It would make me a hypocrite. tbat being said... Fast forward 4 years later my beliefs are changing. There was a recent death in my family that has made me want to try a church again. So on that note, wait until you feel you are comfortable and can be content in that you made the right decision for your family. Don't feel pressured into anything. Id rather make an informed decision for my dd than to just go with what everyone else thinks you're supposed to do.

I really wouldn't do it if you're not practicing the faith or don't really believe in it. I see so many people doing this for all the wrong reasons (to appease grandparents or follow tradition, etc).

I didn't. My husband is Jewish and we are not raising our children with any organized religion. If I had married someone Catholic or Christian I probably would have but I really don't believe in so much that the Catholic church supports or doesn't support.

Re: Have not baptized your child yet?

I was raised Catholic, dh Baptist. When we go to church, we go to a "non denominational one", where they focus on the Bible, Jesus and teachings. It really is kind of Christian, but people from every background go there.

We didn't baptized DS, since we don't go to a Catholic Church, so it didn't make sense for me. When he was a baby he had a dedication.

Thank you for the responses. What is a dedication ceremony like? I attend Catholic Church but am struggling with a few of their positions although understanding of course no religion/church is perfect. But I am struggling with it because I feel strongly about it (position on homosexuality and role of women in church). But I do like everything else about it.

Baptized Lutheran, raised Catholic, married a non religious person who was raised with Muslim and Hindu religions. Neither of us believe in God and any religion. Our child can choose what he wants if he wants when he's older.

For us, it was done in the church we were attending when DS was a baby. It is a short ceremony, where basically the parents commit to raise the baby according to God's ways and teachings.

The same goes for us except I was raised Catholic and my DH was not raised with any type of organized religion.

Re: Have not baptized your child yet?

My father sent us to Catholic School
My mother had us both Dedicated - Pentecostal

Thankfully, I've never been baptized, though it's been offered more times than I can count.

We absolutely refuse to baptize AJ. However, she's leaning to being Christian on her own. Basically because it's what the cool kids all are. Being an Atheist, I find it a little frustrating but realize that we are still outnumbered and that's what it's all about. I don't teach what is wrong with religion. I rather show her how to ask 'why'. She's still learning that. She's afraid to upset her friends and I understand that.

As I told another mom who asked .. Yeah, AJ wants to be Christian but that's ok. It's like raising a vegetarian even though I'm a carnivore. Its just a personal choice. It can't hurt as long as she's not hurting anyone.

However I believe Baptism is something very very spiritually important. Something you go into with the most solemn of intent. A life long soul commitment. I will advise against baptism for her as well until she's an adult. I hope we can keep her on that path.

Ironically her Jewish god parents agree with me. I took that role also very serious when choosing. It was well afterwards I found out my maternal grandmother was Jewish so there's an importance in this as well.
