Anyone know how I can get in touch with a lab for independent analysis?

We were given a Whitman's box of chocolate for Valentine's Day. It was a heart shaped box that the top could be removed but there was a plastic seal on the inside protecting the candy. I removed it with a knife. I didn't notice that the seal had been tampered with but I think I would have as the seal was pretty tight on the box.

I ate a piece of the candy and then took a bite of another piece and all of a sudden I got this taste in my mouth. It tasted like kerosene. Or fuel. That's the only way I can describe it. I immediately spit out the second piece of candy but I knew the taste was like an aftertaste from the first piece.

I'm pg and have a bad cold so I wanted to be sure that it wasn't me and my taste that was off. I had DH taste it (that way we can be poisoned together ) and he did the same thing. Ate the first piece and then, as he went to eat the second, tasted fuel.

I contacted the company and they are sending me an envelope to return the candy to their lab for testing. DH thinks I should keep some of the candy and have it tested ourselves. I'm obviously worried that whatever may have been on the candy could effect the development of the baby. I have no idea who I would even call to do that. Anyone have any suggestions?

I think you can contact the Center for Infectious disease. When I had maybe contacted listeria from salad they had to get involved to check if the food was contaminated.

What a weird experience. Last year I had gotten two little tiny heart boxes with three pieces of chocolate in them. Not sure what brand it was - but when my kids had a piece, they said it tasted so bad. Which is crazy cuz they will normally never pass up candy. I took a bite and it tasted like plastic. We ended up tossing them.

Sorry, no info on where to have it tested but I got a giant box of Whitman for Valentine's too and it was all rotten. I could see that it looked bad, didn't have to eat any of it to know. Hope everything is ok for you

I don't know a lab, but I agree you should get it tested yourself.
