Organized House with Kids

Is this even possible? I feel like anytime I try to straighten up one of my kids will dump out a pile of toys, spill a drink on the floor, track dirt around, etc. I feel like such a scattered mess!Chat Icon

Re: Organized House with Kids

Yes its possible....but only for a very short period of time :) I tidy up several times a day when the kids are off school and its still a mess by bedtime. But I do wake up to a tidyish house and go to bed with similar so I try not to stress...if you come to my house during the day and its a mess well thats life..kids live here and l will be sad when they are gone and everything is in its place. For example my daughter had her birthday 3 weeks ago and her decorations are still hanging up in the kitchen and living room because she likes them so I let it be - if you told me I would be doing this before I had kids I would have laughed in your face.Chat Icon

Hahah

I think there is a difference between messes and organization. Like you can be organized completely but u will still get crumbs.

The key is to get them to clean up. Even with a mini dust buster.

It's possible to keep your house nice.......it just takes work. I've "trained" my kids. LOL They aren't allowed to take out ten million toys at once and I make them stop throughout the day and clean-up so there aren't 50 million things out on the floor by bedtime. I also straighten up throughout the day, as I make trips back and forth through the house I always take something with me to put away. Every night before the kids go to bed they have to help clean up the den and put all of their things away. It's constant work but the alternative would make me crazy, I just don't function well in clutter and chaos.

ETA - As for actual cleaning, I do big cleaning once or twice a week then I just try to upkeep everything. I clean the whole kitchen after meals and make sure the dishes are in the dishwasher and the counters are cleaned off. I use the Swifter to keep things from getting too dusty in between cleanings, I vacuum as needed throughout the week. It's easier to do a little bit here and there then spend seven hours cleaning everything all at once.

Organized House with Kids

Hahahah even without kids I feel like I can't keep up! Lol I clean my kitchen nightly and do a load of laundry every other day. I also do a deep clean every weekend. I do dust and clean up as needed throughout the week. Especially the bathroom. My dining room I just touch up over the weekend since we rarely use it. We also have 2 spare bedrooms we don't use so those just get dusted weekly. My biggest room to clean daily is my den that's where the dog hangs out and she has like 50 toys in a large basket and I put them away daily. By the time I get home she had every one all over the floor down stairs. Makes me crazy so that gets cleaned up daily.

I have three kids that are all pretty young and my house is a mess. I just stopped working recently so I have been trying to reorganize all the chaos that was created in my absence for 2 years. I feel like I am about a 1/3 of the way there but it is really hard to stay on top of things. Not to mention we have big families that give my kids tons of toys. Between the clothes and the toys it's insane. I almost can't wait until my youngest starts kindergarten just so I can organize!

Agree. Organization to me is a home for everything or as my grandmother said "a place for everything and everything in its place"! . Even if we have a few baskets with loose/disorganized toy pieces to me that's still a home and part of being neat!

Even with a cleaning lady and upkeep my home will never be as clean as it was before children. Acceptance!

I saw a funny quote about that
Cleaning your house when you have little kids is like brushing your teeth while eating oreos.
I can't keep my house neat, clean or organized... I have too much stuff & it's just everywhere, and the kids are constantly spilling things, dropping things, etc.. I gave up a long time ago!

Same, word for word. After dinner, we all play for a bit, then we have to clean up before they get their bedtime show. While they're watching that show I do other random cleaning before I pop them in bed.

I always see these things on FB about "my house is messy and I don't care because I want to spend time with my kids" which makes me feel a little bad but I also know I'm kind of a witch to deal with when things aren't a little organized. My house isn't sparkling clean, by any means, but I can't stand having "stuff" around

Organized House with Kids

Granted I only have one kid, but it absolutely is possible, and I work ft. Weekends I do a deep clean-Windows, all dusting, laundry, vacuum, mop, kitchen, bathroom.

And then I just rotate reorganizing stuff throughout the year. Right now I'm working on the kitchen-I take everything out of a cabinet, see what I really need, clean the cabinet and put back neatly what I'm keeping. By the end of the year I'll have done the entire house and I'll start again next year.

Dd isn't allowed to take out a ton of toys, and with the exception of her play kitchen and easel nothing is kept out in the open.

Every morning/night things are picked up and put away.

So possible. We never left toys in the living room. If there were we had a small bucket to hide them in. Make your kids clean up. You're not a maid.

It gets messy but I've made a game out of it and they're doing ok with it... we have nice bins I got at HomeGoods that are fabric so they hold stuff but still look nice. Now they know one is for MLP, one is for Jake and the pirates, sofia.... etc. Chat Icon I tell everyone "don't buy toys with a million parts" Chat Icon

Yup, I always say, it's like shoveling during a snowstorm! It is possible I guess but it takes A LOT of work and sadly a lot of arguments (in my case anyway). My kiddos don't love to clean up after themselves and I refuse to do it all the time. Hoping it gets easier over time.

I feel like I need to hire someone to just come on and reorganize everything, not necessarily "clean", and then I can maintain.

This is how I feel.
It's too far gone.
The clutter and disorganization- not just with my daughter's things, but with EVERYTHING- is to the point where it's overwhelming and I just throw my hands up. It's too much for me to get a handle on myself.
Too many years of laziness have caught up with me.

How long does it take you to deep clean the entire house on the average weekend?
I work FT also and have tremendous guilt spending a ton of weekend time cleaning. I know I have to get over it though as I'm usually stressed out by the state of my house. Chat Icon

It's impossible to do everything. It's always about priorities. Someone could prefer to spend time deep cleaning on weekends and others prefer to meal prep and excercise or spend time with family and friends. Also kids activities take up many people's time which allows for less time at home to clean!

Yes. Thank you. I always feel like something is wrong with me or I am just a natural born slob because I really have no motivation or desire to clean or organize. I am so tired after working all day, even veging on the couch staring at my phone or the tv takes precedence over cleaning, organizing or putting away.

About an hour and a half? Like I said, I don't let messes build up though. I will say I have a pretty small house too.

But yes, priorities are important. because my house is well maintained its easy for me to do things with my family, and I don't get stressed about the house.
