No thesis from me, those days are over. :) I agree with you that all lives matter. No one can debate that (that I can imagine!) but if one segment of the population is having inequality issues (still! In this day and age!) we need to get out a spotlight and help raise them up. Internally and externally. That's all. It's me being white standing with a friend who is black and reminding people that she matters. That she deserves the same treatment. Just like anyone else. hope that makes sense. Because so often we like to think racism isn't "as bad as it used to be" but that's good enough. That's not acceptable. For you or me or the youth of America or the future generations.

And I get that. I really do. Though I think in that - we are saying we are different. But if I stood there with my black friend, my gay friends , my Puerto Rican friends , my adopted friends , etc and we said Our Lives Matter. All Lives matter. We are the same. That brings everyone together. Saying black lives matter, cops matter, etc etc keeps the divide. BUT ALL LIVES MATTER bring us together as humans

Now that may just be my opinion. And I know how everyone here loves opinions. But it is.

Exactly! It's great that BLM is happening, however I feel that sometimes when ppl talk about racism, they just simplify it to blacks and whites, and in reality there are other races that are victims of racism on a daily basis. But when we do talk about ALM, it includes ppl of all races and it doesn't isolate one from another. There are many races in this country, not just 2.

Because right now, at this very moment, we're talking about BLM. To discuss anyone else, takes away from the BLM movement.

Very interesting..

The simple fact that people are now hunting down officers to make a point is disgusting. This past week we lost 7 officers. SEVEN. Their lives mattered too. They didn't die protecting anyone, they didn't die stopping a crime. They died because someone picked them from a crowd because they wanted to make a point. THEY MATTERED. THEY DO MATTER, so I applaud this man. ALL lives matter, Black lives matter, OFFICERS lives matter. Until we we stop segregating in general we'll never make a change, and yes I believe it's all segregation. Even if you're doing it to your own race. Maybe I would feel more compassion for the BLM if it didn't stem from some real bulll shitt. You get this didn't start during the shootings right? This started a few years ago when Sharpton started his No Justice No Peace crap. I was there. I watched him come into town and BLOW IT UP. He legit took a crowd that wanted answers and were doing it peacefully and just about caused a riot. WTF. WHat did that help? There is a real problem here. I see that, I know that, and I understand that. I'm not stupid to that, but I shouldn't have to worry that my husband my not come home because he was getting gas and some angry fool killed him in the name of BLM or No Justice NO Peace. THAT is -fed up.

I honestly believe that the BLM movement started out with great intentions but it has really only caused an even greater divide.

and see this is the sentiment where you loose my support. It is as if the BLM movement is saying no other issue is as important as BLM. We all have issues. I am not marginalizing your issues and you shouldn't marginalized mine. I think this is the fundamental divide where you get people responding that all lives matter and the BLM advocates want to be heard. Which they should be heard, and responded to respectfully, but once you shoot down all other marginalized groups by insisting the safe space you are looking for is just for BLM, you become the exact thing you are fighting against.

Very interesting..

As per the BLM's own website - it started as a response to the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the death of Trayvon Martin.

The BLM website is really interesting and informative, and just proves that many people aren't truly aware about what they stand for.

As with any movement or group, there are extremists on both sides. By lumping the entire BLM movement with the actions of a few is no better than saying all cops are bad because of a few bad ones.

Like I posted before, one has nothing to do with the other. But saying all lives matter to the people involved in BLM disparages their belief that their lives do not matter. There was a really interesting thread last week with some great info posted about it.

but in my mind they are completely intertwined.

I read the articles and the posts earlier in the week. I think the crux of the issue, is exactly what I responses to previously.
To women, female lives matter.
To a Palestinian, Palestinian lives Matter
To a Jew, Jewish lives matter
To a police officer, cops lives matter
To a Hispanic person, Hispanic lives matter

To say well we need to be heard, we all hear you. But changes have to come from within as well as without a community. By saying BLM, and getting angry when people respond ALM it is just as disparaging to every other minority or persecuted group because the message being received by anyone not in BLM is no your lives don't matter as much because you are co opting our movement. When you want something from someone else, you have to be willing to look inside and ask yourself how can I help reach across lines to get both of us to move to the middle.

BLM isn't saying that white lives don't matter… Or that cops don't matter… so many people just automatically get so turned off by black lives matter that they're not even examining what it actually means

Remember back in the day when they were feminists fighting to have women get the right to vote ? You know how we're still currently fighting to get equal pay as women in the workplace ? And why is that? It's because women matter. I bet any amount of money if women right now stood up and had a campaign called "women matter" to fight for equal treatment - no one would say boo, except for misogynistic white men. Saying something matters is just drawing attention to the need that it needs to become equal. That's it.

If you're good solid cop… Black lives matter should not be something that you're fighting. It should be something that you support. The only people that should worry about black lives matter are racists and unjust cops who abuse their power and authority, iMo. If you go to the BLM website it's all spelled out. There's no anti cop smearing or promotion of violence. Are some people in there doing bad shit? Yes - just like in anything.

Jmo of course.

And yes many people have perfectly respectful dealings with cops. And yes many cops are good… Many of us have law-enforcement in our families.

So well said! It's a movement and drawing attention to something that needs fixing. I don't think people who say "All Lives Matter" get HOW offensive they sound.

Probably gonna regret even replying but I cannot see how ALL LIVES MATTER is offensive to anyone. You and everyone else who continue to fill these threads with your views - cannot change the fact that I believe that our lives are equal.

And please don't try to give me a college course reply. I'm not that interested in your fact checking response

People get outraged that sg komen sues other cancer charities for other types of cancer when they use "for the cure" so I am going to say, yes, to your first statement. And to the second one, people try to empathize with others when they lost someone special to say they understand how you feel.

The impulse behind changing Blacklivesmatter to Alllivesmatter is that to a LOT of people it comes across that ONLY black lives matter. Why do you think there is such a divide right now? The message is clearly not coming across the way it was intended and that is why so many people try to take the stance that ALL lives matter.

Very interesting..

Unfortunately the difference between BLM and ALM is not being understood here.

ETA: Here is a great article/description about it Link

"President Obama put it well during a panel discussion about the criminal justice system last month. “I think the reason that the organizers used the phrase ‘black lives matter’ was not because they were suggesting nobody else’s lives matter. What they were suggesting was, there is a specific problem that is happening in the African American community that’s not happening in other communities. And that is a legitimate issue that we’ve got to address.”"

"But understanding “black lives matter” to mean “only” black lives matter has been a misinterpretation from the beginning, one made in ignorance of the intent of the statement and the statistical facts that led to it. It’s often a misinterpretation made in innocent ignorance, I’m sure."

"If you choose to say those words “all lives matter” in a conversation with your friends, or if you type the hashtag on Twitter or put it up on Facebook or something, you should know what you’re saying. You are not saying that all human life is equal. You are saying that there is no racial disparity in America. You are refuting rafts of statistics that prove there is racial disparity in America. You are saying, simply and straightforwardly, that black lives do not matter. At least not as much as white ones do. Is this what you want to be saying?"

I would rather concrete results that achieve goals over arguing about semantics. By arguing about names your message and the desired results are getting lost. And at the end of the day that is what should be the most important thing.

Re: Very interesting..

I don't have big fancy words and news articles and links

I don't disagree with the blm movement really,I do have a problem with those who have no idea what it actually is/stands for and just use it as a platform to assume all
Cops are bad

IMO I feel like if you are going to discuss blm and some of the awful tragedies that have happened then it also needs to correlate with blue lives matter and the lack of respect these days for police officers

There are both problems that need to be addressed and not let them cancel the other out or bc I'm blue lives matter I'm anti blm and vice versa

That's for me why the all lives matter motion is important. Bc it says yes blm. Yes blue. Yes mine. Yes yours etc

It doesn't at least in my eyes any of the other ones

Hope that made sense.

I rarely open my mouth on these type of threads but I think this is utterly ridiculous.

By saying "all lives matter," one is saying that black lives do not matter?

Really?

Says who?

Based on what?

You are saying, simply and straightforwardly, that black lives do not matter. At least not as much as white ones do. Is this what you want to be saying?"

I rarely open my mouth on these type of threads but I think this is utterly ridiculous.

By saying "all lives matter," one is saying that black lives do not matter?

Really?

Says who?

Based on what?

Did you even read the rest of the thread? It's all there. And if your questions are still not answered, a simple google search will give you a plethora of information.

In fact, the answer is in the original post you only quoted some of

Very interesting..

Here's the thing though, The LEADERS of BLM need to do better and talking about what it is! That is their job! If there is a huge misconception about your movement and you don't like how it's being portrayed then freaking TALK about it! Go to those rallies and say STOP this is NOT what BLM means. Explain it. Break it down. They aren't and they aren't because THIS gets more attention. Getting people fired up anyway you can works but not for the good. Be LOUDER be BETTER then the asssholes screwing up YOUR message! I agree there is an issue, and I agree it needs to change, but if you can't even get your own group on board with what you're trying to accomplish how do you think you can change anything? Being louder, being meaner and being madder isn't the way. Killing innocent people isn't the way. Be the change. Stand up and say STOP. Stand up and say that people like Sharpton ARE NOT doing the right thing. BE THE CHANGE. SHOW PEOPLE.

Re: Very interesting..

I hate referencing actors as a way to educate oneself on a topic or to garner another perspective, but Matt McGorry from OITNB and How To Get Away With Murder broke down AllLivesMatter vs BLM perfectly.

All Lives Matter is a great THOUGHT, but there is an issue specifically targeting one group of people. By supporting BLM shows that, to you, all lives DO matter.
