It's a SMALL World!

Sometimes it amazes me, how small the world can be:

Years ago when I was in law school, there was a guy I was friends with - very casually, like just say hi and chat occasionally. I knew he had a crush on me and I wasn't interested, so I kept it very casual. We did not stay in touch after school ended. A few years after I graduated, I am in a long term relationship with someone, living together etc and my BF's co-worker/friend (a woman) comes over to visit. We start talking and it turns out her husband is the guy I knew from law school - small enough world! But, within a couple of years, they get divorced. I run into him in court every once in a while and we chat, catch up. He's remarried and lives in the same town that I do. Last year, I started a new job at a very large organization. Yesterday, I find out that the guys ex-wife (my ex-BF's good friend) works where I now work too - and it is likely that at some point, our paths will cross. Just thought that was funny/strange how sometimes the most random things happen.

Anyone else have any "small world" stories?

Re: It's a SMALL World!

DH and I know some same people from when we were growing up and our early adult lives, but DH and I didn't meet until I was 36 and he was 41.

We both grew up in Astoria, but on opposite ends. Might just have been opposite worlds.

We had the same insurance agent, the same accountant.

Re: It's a SMALL World!

I have a ton of these stories.

# 1:

My first job out of law school was at a small law firm in downtown Manhattan (I was hired a few days after the bar exam) and 5 months after I started, the firm hired 3 new lawyers and 1 of them was a classmate from my HS and college (I will call her "Susie").

Just some background: I was never really friendly w/ Susie in HS as we hung in totally different circles (she believed she was HYP material and eventually got rejected and went to the same college as me yet we never socialized there. She went to a top ranked law school and I assumed I would never see or hear from her again).

So here I am at my first job out of law school, and my firm puts me in charge of "training" Susie and the other 2 new hires since I was the first lawyer hired in a specific department. That was interesting to say the least.

3 years later, I was looking to lateral to a larger law firm and through a college sorority sister, got an interview at her firm and was hired in their Long Island office. My first day at the firm, they gave me a Firm Directory and I looked through it when I saw Susies name as an associate in the NYC office. So this was the 2nd time, Susie and I worked in the same firm...Chat Icon Chat Icon

# 2:

In HS, my best friend moved from Queens to Levittown and started dating this guy named Mark in her senior year. Things with Mark didn't last too long (maybe 2 months) and I never met the guy or knew what he looked like. He also didn't know anything about me or what I looked like. After graduating from college, I went on Match.com and went on a date with a guy who moved to NYC and was from Levittown. It wasn't until we talked about our HS days on our 2nd date that I connected the dots and realized this "Mark" was the same one my best friend dated in HS. When I told my best friend about this, she Chat Icon

I always found stories like these so funny.

DH and I were on a cruise and sitting at our table were a bunch of newlyweds. We start chatting about where everyone is from and this one couple was from the Carolinas. I say we are from Long Island and the guy says his college room mate was from LI, Bohemia to be exact. And I freak out, I am from Bohemia. Then he says he lived on Sycamore Ave. I said no way! My Grandparents live on Sycamore Ave!!

It was hysterical. It turns out my sister went to school with him.

Re: It's a SMALL World!

Dh and I met online at 22 and 27. He lived in the town next to mine. (He lived in my town for 5 years). I used to hang out in his town, in a bar he used to frequent. I was friends with his friends younger siblings. He lived around the block from my sister.
We found out we had the same pediatrician growing up.
i think we crossed paths many times, but maturity and the Internet finally brought us together.

It's a SMALL World!

So many. I ran into friends from HS at a train station in France, ran into a guy I used to work with at a cafe in Buenos Aires. What were the chances that we were both traveling to these countries and went to the same exact place at the same time?

It's a small world in NYC too. My ex works on the other side of the city but what do you know, I've literally ran into him on the street 2x. It's so awkward. It's such a big city --- why must I ran into him?

This actually reminded me of another story:

DH and I were on our honeymoon in Aruba. We were going on an excursion and started talking to 2 girls who were on the same excursion. Turns out they were from the same VERY small upstate NY town that DH's brother lives in and one of the girls DH works for DH's brother and the other one worked for BIL's girlfriend

It's a SMALL World!

When we were buying our house, I was up one night and couldn't sleep. I was on Facebook looking at DH's cousin's page and among her friends was the wife of the couple whose house we were buying. I clicked on her profile and sure enough- 4 mutual friends, all DH's family.... Who live in Florida!

Turns out that the husband was childhood friends with DH's other cousin when they lived in NY (back in the 80's!) and they still kept in touch.

So random how we ended up buying DH's cousins' friend's house.

Re: It's a SMALL World!

I went to sleepaway camp the summer I was 10 and spent much of my time with a girl I'll call Jennifer- we had a similar wacky sense of humor and had a great time together. I always remembered her name and where she was from, because it wasn't too far from where I lived.

Eight years later I was attending my college orientation weekend. I was assigned a roommate in the dorms. My room had two name tags on the door- mine and hers! I remembered her right away. She arrived a few minutes later with a couple other girls. We chatted and she immediately knew who I was, and offered me a cigarette which I declined. Chat Icon I left to go to the bathroom and on my way back I overheard her tell her friends that she was surprised to see I'd become such a jap. (Should that be capitalized?) She ended up sleeping elsewhere that night and I'd see her on campus but she never spoke to me again.

I live in nj. At our community pool I met this woman I had never met before. It turns out that her uncle was my childhood dr. He is my parents neighbor. I have known him for 36 years. My parents still live on LI.

It's a SMALL World!

I went to a Drum Major training academy in the summer of my Junior into Senior year and I met a friend from New England with whom I clicked with right away! We both loved Bon Jovi and were wearing bon jovi tee shirts Chat Icon During our senior year, we were both drum majors at our high school and even competed against one another once, but never really kept in touch.
In August before my freshman year in college, I report to band camp and There she was!!!!!!! We ended up going to the same school and we've been BFF ever since.

I have a few but these this is my favorite

My DH was previously engaged. I never met her but knew of her , her name etc. and that she was an attorney. I am also an attorney and I have my real estate brokers license as well. A couple of years ago I was the real estate broker for my best friend and her husband when they were buying their house. Her husband is in a union and gets free legal representation for house closings. So, I asked My best friend's husband for the attorneys information- he emails me a firm name.. HMM The firm name sounds SO familiar I must have had a case with the firm while wearing my 'lawyer hat' right? Nope-- a quick google search reveals its the firm DH's ex worked for last I had heard.. Right well, not only was it the same firm but DH's ex was the attorney that was assigned to my friends closing!!! SO I had all my dealings with her and sat next to her at the closing lol. It never came up at all that she was DH's ex-- still don't know if she knows lol

It's a SMALL World!

My DH was in a long term relationship before me, he bought a ring but it ended before he popped the question cause she was cheating. When him and I got series she would text him all the time in the middle of the night, send him pictures she almost broke us up cause she wouldnt stop we had to get his number changed.

Two years ago i went for a free trial for a mommy and me gym class in our area with our youngest son he loved it so i paid 6 months upfront. My DH goes to the class with him and calls me at work to tell me the girl running the class is his ex and what should he do. So for 6 months once a week we both had to go to a class and make nice with his ex.

Re: It's a SMALL World!

I have a few of these stories but the truly amazing one is my brother's story.

When we were young one of my brother's good friends had a house in NH on a lake that he would go to with his friends family. Fast forward many years to my brother meeting his future wife (in Cali but she was from MA). Her family had a summer house on a lake in NH. The first weekend my brother went up to her house in NH he knew his friend would be up there the same weekend so they said they would get together. When my brother got there he immediately thought the lake looked familiar. He called his friend and his friend told him to walk out to the dock on the lake and he did the same. They were so close they were able to wave to each other!

I have three similar stories:

1. I was talking to my cousin and I said "I know one other family that lives in your town -- a former co-worker of mine." It turns out it's her next-door neighbor and they're good friends!

2. Years ago, I went on a few dates with a guy I met online. He said "I previously met one other girl from the Bronx on this site." It turns out I know her.

3. At my engagement party, my husband's cousin said "Oh, I know one other person from the Bronx -- a woman named Donna -- she's a podiatrist." I'm like "Donna _____?" She's a good friend of mine; she'll be at the wedding. (The engagement party was only family.)

It's so weird how these happen!

Although I legally took his name, professionally I use my maiden name. BUt I had sent her letters etc with our letterhead which has both my name and my DH's name on it. lol. I am PRETTY sure that she knew. It was all very cordial- Just WEIRD> I texted my husband from the closing asking him (as a joke..) whether he wanted me to give her any messages. He replied something like--" umm ya I guess, just tell her "hi". In my head I was thinking "idiot, I was kidding!

Re: It's a SMALL World!

My mom grew up in same town all her life, moved to staten island when she got married but moved back to original town when I was 7. Fast fwd to my hs years. I met (my now) DH senior year but somehow never knew who he was til then (we went to middle and hs together). Started dating 2 yrs after graduation. Turns out his cousin played baseball ioth my brother (my grandfather coached), his grandfather knew my grandfather bc he did the electric in his house, his aunt and dad worked with my mom at local grocery store when they were in hs... So my mom and his family know a lot of the same people.

Just recently found out that My MILs cousin was very good friends with my Moms sister in law (who did not grow up in same town as my mom did)

This girl my DH works with ill call her R always ends up meeting people in our family.
1. R was on a plane with her friend going on vacation and my brother (never met her) who is sitting behind her, starts up a convo and finds out she works with my DH.
2. My DH starts boxing (for exercise) his coach is dating Rs best friend
3. Rs sister is getting married and they realize as they are getting ready that the girl Rs sister hired to do her hair is DHs cousin.

I work in the city and 2 people i work with went to my HS one graduated with my BIL

It's a SMALL World!

There was a guy in college that I hung out with. We hooked up a few times, but it never turned into anything. Fast forward to years later and I'm now married with a DD. My DH plays hockey, so DD and I go with him to watch his game. Everyone is hanging out together before the game, and in walks the guy I hooked uo with. Apparently he's been playing on my DH's hockey team the whole season and I never knew! We just stared at each other and it was so awkward. He was staring at me, my DD, my DH, like he was so confused lol. I told DH after the game and he said he noticed him looking at all of us and didn't know why he was so shocked he had a kid lol. The guy doesn't play on his team anymore. He left after that season lol.
