Re: Has anyone ever down sized to a smaller home?

I just upgraded, going from just under 1200 sq ft to 1750 plus a finished basement. I would not want to move back unless something drastic happened. It's been great. We're not on top of each other. I like that I can host a party or a holiday and the guests aren't crammed in. Yes, it's more to clean / heat / maintain, but IMO it's worth it to me.

Weigh the non-monetary costs of downsizing before moving out.

We're 2 adults, 2 young kids in 1,500 sq ft. In the next couple of years, I'd like to move into a slightly larger house. As the kids get bigger, so will their "stuff" and I already feel like we're out of room. So no, I would not downsize, so long as I could afford the house I was in.

Not the same situation. But we bought a smaller home on purpose and have no intention to move.

Space to me is relative. The more space you have the more crap you fill it with. Some necessary some not.

To me it's also all about layout, storage space, and how you use the space you have.

I completely agree. I try not to have clutter and I know if I had more space I'd probably add unneeded things.

I haven't downsized but I would. If the house works for your family to still live comfortably then I why not? You can you the extra money on family vacations or just little things you wouldn't have been able to do as easily with the higher bills.

Very true. We live in a small house(2br house family of 4) I recently started reorganizing all my things and it's such a help.especially the closets

The "Tiny House" movement has more people thinking about this.
We flip houses and our specialty is NY style tiny houses. The smallest was 625 sq ft.
We have two houses that will be ready soon that are 1000 sq ft or less
every open house we hold has a few people looking to downsize, some are empty nesters, some have young kids.

Our primary residence is way too large for us most of the year because my kids are grown. I still host the major holidays though so I need the space for that, once my kids get married & I can pass the torch for hostessing I would love a smaller house with a bigger piece of property.

I do agree that there will probably be costs associated with downsizing that may affect the actual financial benefit

Depends on your situation but DH and I recently sold our house that was just too small for us (2 bed/1bath at 760 sq feet). I felt completely claustrophobic living there and couldn't wait to sell. Our bedroom had enough room for just a Queen-sized bed, 2 nightstands and a small dresser - I felt like a caged animal because of how tight the space was.

We are now looking into a larger property (1200-2000+ sq ft) because we need a 3rd bedroom for guests and possibly home-office. I think it really depends on the layout. Some of the houses profiled in that TV show 'Tiny Nation' would be ideal for younger people who just need a place to crash but I cant picture cooking or relaxing in a room that's only 300 sq feet. if it would cut your mortgage in half and you keep your schools, I would absolutely move!!

if that money saved can allow me to travel more or save for college funds, why not.
clear out the clutter, you need a lot less than you think
