Have some NYC DOE friends on Facebook sharing that petition for schools to close tomorrow. Are the roads that bad in the city? Something said "we shouldn't be open the day after a snowstorm" but we've had a day pass already.

One teacher friend lives in queens and says parking will be a nightmare for days but she's a teacher and knows they never close & that any petition isn't going to do anything.

Anyway ...Is it bad in city?

No idea but my question- and this applies to my district that is closed tomorrow as well- is, how is it going to be any different on Tuesday? The mounds of snow aren't going to magically disappear by Tuesday. What good is closing tomorrow going to do? At this rate they'd have to close all week.

I guess it depends where. Today I was in Bayside, Glen Oaks, Great Neck and the roads were really fine.

Good question. We are on a 2 hour delay tomorrow. I did drive past the school. It was sorta icey I guess.

Re: How are queens and city streets? That petition that's circulating

My parents were hit hard.

An ambulance and two police cars got stuck on their block. The fire department was successful clearing them.

Their road hasn't been plowed since early am Saturday.

The Middle Village, Woodhaven, OP, Richmond Hill areas has roads that are impassable.

Another thing that's laughable is the cities website to track the plows. The information isn't accurate. They registered plows going down the block with the plow UP as being plowed.

It really is that bad in northern Queens.

I personally think the petition isn't going to do anything.

Yeah middle village is bad. I'm being induced in the morning and we got my car and my moms car out and parked on 80th St so we can leave in the morning. There's currently a channel 2 van stuck on the corner.

I don't think it has anything to do with the mounds of snow as it does the road conditions. Side roads are still pretty bad, at least where we are.

i'm at school right now (in queens), and the main roads were just fine. The problem was parking though. the plows put mounds of snow in every parking spot, and I drove around for 30 mins to find a spot. Keep in mind that the school day does not start for another hour, and I had to get here at 6:30am just for a parking spot. I ended up parking in an illegal spot where I could potentially get towed, all just so I could get into work this morning. All of the parking garages are full.

I'm in Ozone Park and there is absolutely no parking by my school. We were are at 6am looking for parking. It was a nightmare. People where getting out of their cars and shoveling to park their cars.

What is really bad is all the kids walking in the streets because they can't get near the sidewalks. It is so dangerous.

It's really bad by me in Elmhurst. We were one of the areas hit the hardest, along with Jackson Heights. Only the main road by me (which is 2 blocks away) was plowed and not well. It took me 25 minutes to walk to the train today when it usually takes 10 tops. DH couldn't even get his jeep out.

ETA: I came into work and regret it. I'm 6 months pregnant and should've just stayed home.

When I worked in Queens it was never the roads that were the issue after a snowstorm, it was the god awful parking situation. There is NOWHERE to park and when they plow they make VERY little attempt to clear the roads so that there is parking. It's honestly a nightmare, I dreaded having to go back to work after it snowed because I could spend all morning driving around looking for parking. Good luck to everyone today!

And they still will be tomorrow.
By me they never plow down to blacktop on the side roads and the stuff just freezes and becomes a nightmare to drive on.
But it will be the same tomorrow, and the next day and really until it all melts or washes away

My street in Bayside is bad. But that's bc it is not a through street and no one cares about it. Dh can't go to work today. I don't know if the elementary school bus came this morning - not sure how it could have. There is only one way in and out of my street right now, only one car can go at a time and it's packed with ice and snow. Not sure how the bus could have turned around to get out.

Yup. And alternate side is suspended till Monday. Nobody will be digging their cars out if they don't have to.

Side roads are not going to melt or get cleaned in one day. It usually takes a few days, at least where I live.

Same here. The 28 bus runs down my street and I have barely seen any buses. My street is a two way and is just barely that. My car won't be moved from the street, I got plowed in pretty good. Thankfully DH's car is in the parking lot.

Yep...I live in Jackson Heights and we got slammed with 34". I live on a main road that leads directly to the highway so, luckily, it's plowed out and you can see black top. But, I hear the side streets are still pretty bad.
I took the day off today, but trying to find parking after work this whole week is going to be a nightmare.

The streets I drove in Whitestone were better than the ones I drove to get to work in Bayside which surprised me but again it could just be the streets I drove, overall it was a mess. Parking was really the main issue.

As of right now, the streets by me have still not been plowed! And there are cars stuck in the middle of the road on a neighboring block. Chat Icon

ETA: My block was plowed at 4:45 PM yesterday afternoon. Naturally I heard the plow turning my corner right while I was walking across the street in thigh deep snow to get to a cleared sidewalk. Chat Icon I had to high step it to get out of the way.

I'm in Forest Hills and most of the streets by me have been plowed, not perfectly but passable. I am on the same street as the hospital, so plows have been down quite a few times. 108th, Yellowstone and Queens Blvd were perfectly clean. Bus stops not so great though, tiny little walkway to get to the bus. The mounds of snow at the corners and crosswalks is awful.

Midtown is perfect, you can barely tell it snowed! I want to know why it can't be like that everywhere!

Most of us that work in the city know that the dsny worked their collective a$$es off. And Quens got record amounts of snow. No one I know was mad at them. But I have to take side streets to get to my school in southeast Queens and those were a disaster. It took 2.5 hours to go 17 miles. Again, not the fault of dsny. I'm annoyed at the mayor for not giving them enough time to clear streets by insisting on opening school today. The DOE employs 80k teachers and educates 1.1 million kids... which means there were way more people on the roads before it was really safe for everyone to be there. The commute home today was much easier, which proves my point: after a major storm, we need time to go back to business as usual.
