NY to Orlando - Is driving worth the money saved?
We booked our Disney trip for April and we are trying to decide how we are getting there. We have 4 kids - our oldest is 5yo, our twins will be almost 3 (they are still free at Disney, which is why we're going) and the baby will be 6 months. Flying will be $1600-1800 depending on the airline. Is driving worth the money saved? Has anyone driven with children this young? Is it worth my sanity? lol We would stop overnight both ways to break it up a bit. Thoughts? Any and all advice is welcomed!

I don't think it's worth it. Especially spending 24 hours in the car with 4 kids. You couldn't pay me to drive!

No way, especially with your kids' ages. My kids would not even sit in a car for 1 hr at 6 months.
One of my earliest memories is of going to Disney at age 5. I remember being miserable in the car! I still hate being in the car for long periods 30 yrs later.

Not worth it at all, if only for the fact of the vacation days lost driving back and forth.

The thought of flying gives me hives too! 4 kids through security!
We're going be second week but spending a couple of days at the Legoland resort and then on Disney property for 4 nights.
How old are your kids?
We went when my oldest was 2.5 and I was pregnant with the twins. We had an amazing time! Leashes (which I said id NEVER do!) will definitely be involved with my twins LOL.

NY to Orlando - Is driving worth the money saved?
It's not worth it to drive! We considered this last year but chose to spend the money on flights instead. We're a family of 5. My twins were turning 3 a week after our trip so this was our incentive to go also. My DD was about to turn 5. They all behaved well on the flight, bought them headphones to watch TV on JetBlue and had a ton of stuff in their backpacks like snacks, crayons, modeling clay to keep them busy. 2.5 hours on a plane is LONG with kids, but you'll manage. Plus airport security is much easier when traveling with kids, no taking shoes off etc.. In JetBlue boarding area they have a small play area while you wait to board. My advice would be to fly JetBlue. I thought I would be more stressed but it all worked out. Your in vacay mode so normal rules don't apply.

Time is precious and i wouldnt waste 2-3 days of our lives sitting in the car. I will always throw money at the problem and fly!!

I normally would agree with your DH and say drive. But that's only because I have a fear of flying. We are going in June and are flying and I'm already having panic attacks. BUT, we drive to NC every year with the kids (5 year old twins and a 3 year old) and by midway they are miserable. My DH refuses to drive to fl and I kind of agree this time. It's not worth any money saved. You'll need your sanity for Disney :)

My kids are 6 and 4. we also went two years ago when they were 4 and 2. Flying is also stressful but at least its only a few minutes through security and the flight is 2 1/2 hours. Our flight is at 7 am and we will be there by 9:30 am and be done!
Are you planning on going to islip? That is even easier with kids but it is not as crazy and busy!

You know... I always forget about Islip! Which airlines fly in/out of there? I want an early morning flight too. That's when they're the happiest.
Are you staying on property?

Re: NY to Orlando - Is driving worth the money saved?
Depends on how much your time is worth... When we were kids, we did the drive all the time. Now that we have very little vacation, we fly everywhere. The drive to Florida isn't awful...

I could not. 2 hours on a plane vs 3000000 in a car.
Not worth it to me and dh agrees.

Re: NY to Orlando - Is driving worth the money saved?
We're doing it, granted, it's from Maryland. It's about 14 hours. Gas is estimated to cost <$150 (Gasbuddy.com). A hotel en route ~$100. My kids are 2 and 5, airfare was about $1400 so we're looking at close to $1150 saved.
By the time you leave your house, park the car, get to the terminal, check in, get on the plane, taxi, fly, taxi, get off plane, pick up bags...etc. it's at least 5 hours, so for us it's about 9 extra hours for $1000. I'll take it! We put the DVD player on in the car and they're happy as clams

Re: NY to Orlando - Is driving worth the money saved?
It's a LONG drive, REALLY long, I've never done it with kids and nor would I want to, I barely survived it!! Plus it's SO many lost days of vacation spent on travel. At least when you fly, in two hours you're there and you're on vacation. You really can't beat that IMO.

We flew out of ISP to Orlando with the kids (1.5 and 6 at the time) and it was a breeze, It's such a nice, small, quiet airport and security was no biggie..........they just had them walk through the metal detector with me.

We are driving.
We are also driving during at a peak travel time - Presidents Week, when airfare to Orlando is insane.
So as far as $$ is concerned, I hope its worth it. My kids are really good with car rides. Its going to be an adventure for sure!
