Q if you have had dental implants

So it looks like I am going to have to get a tooth extracted where a root canal basically went bad and infected my gum. I had an apicoectomy done about a year and a half ago to try and save the tooth but it seems like it failed.. what sucks even more is that its one of my front teeth too...

So I just wanted to get some experiences about the process. I am supposed to get an extraction done and bone grafting, I forgot to ask the oral surgeon but are these done at the same time?

Also how long did you wait until putting the implant in, and how was your recovery time with each of these steps (extraction, etc)?

If you had to have a flipper if the extraction was at a visible part of your mouth, how was your experience with wearing one, were you able to eat, talk normally?

Q if you have had dental implants

I had 2 done recently (1 perfect and the other a huge problem):

1. extraction and grafting are done at the same time.
2. implant placed about 3 months later. Recovery was not rough, except for some swelling. The implant that has failed has been a nightmare, but the successful one is perfect.
3. I had a flipper and it was annoying. It did affect my speech mildly (lisping) and I couldn't eat with it (but I have a gagging problem, so that could've affected it).

Re: Q if you have had dental implants

I can only answer one of your questions since I never went through with the implant (it was expensive and the tooth I had to have extracted was way in the back so I decided to just leave it with nothing, it can't be seen)

But in terms of the bone graft- yes they can do that right at the time of the extraction. The oral surgeon actually said he preferred to do it that way, since you are already numb and you get it done in all one shot.

Q if you have had dental implants

Both of my kids are genetically missing teeth in the front (the one next to the front). My daughter is missing only one, and my son is missing both.

So when my daughter got braces, they spaced her teeth out to accommodate and implant. She got her braces off at 11 and could not get an implant until she was done growing. She has worn a flipper for the past 5 years with no problems. It's annoying, and sometimes she has to use denture glue to keep it in, but shes been a trooper.

We just started the implant process and they put the implant part up in her gum, now she has to wait until March to heal before they can talk about putting the tooth in. It's a long process, but she had very little pain and is doing well with it.

Re: Q if you have had dental implants

I also just had to extract one front tooth. Extraction and bone grafting is done on the same day. I have to wait till 3 months for it to heal and start the implant process which was told takes about 6-9 months.

Thank you all for the responses!

Also I am curious what you paid for the implant soup to nuts? I am getting the different costs from both the oral surgeon (for bone grafting and implant) and the dentist (for the flipper and the crown after the implant) and I am like Chat Icon

A kidney. LOL. For the 2 implants, I paid the oral surgeon $3,600 and I'm being quoted another $3,200 for 2 crowns. The flipper was about $150.

I am paying $1900 for the implant and the crown. My daughter did not need an extraction. The flipper was about $200 I think.

Q if you have had dental implants

I need two. One can wait. It's all the way in the back. But, the other can't wait too much longer. And I've been putting it off because of $$. Why are these things so damn expensive. Dental health is so important, yet who the hell can afford this stuff??

Not related to the original question, so sorry to hijack, but it's funny that they are giving her an implant. I am also missing an eye-tooth, but they just moved my teeth over on that side so that my canine is next to the front tooth.

Ugh tell me about it. This one tooth is going to cost me between 4-5k after all is said and done and that's if insurance gives me a few hundred dollars.

My insurance covered the extraction and will cover part of the crown, but it did not cover any part of the implant. The rest is out-of-pocket.

The space was too great and they said they couldn't pull her teeth over that much. I am also missing the same tooth, but I still have a baby tooth in that spot. I guess there was nothing to push it out so its still there. My son is missing both eye teeth, so we are trying to decide what to do about his. It would make more sense to pull his together. At least it would be the consistent on both sides.

Thanks. Same for me- extraction covered and like $400 toward the crown. My dentist wants like, $700 for the flipper, which I thought was high based on what people on here said they were charged. Maybe because it's a front tooth, I don't know. Ugh Chat Icon

I went through a huge ordeal - had to have 3 teeth right in the front bottom row removed - such a nightmare. I wore a flipper for years until they could figure out what to do since an implant was rejected (the other 2 teeth were removed to graft enough bone - but it took almost a year before i could get the implants so I lived with a flipper for 7 years!)

I hated every day of my flipper. No one noticed it but it was uncomfortable. Now DH has a flipper and he keeps playing with it and I could kill him it bothers me to see it so bad. We cannot afford another set of implants for him so he is probably going to have to wait 7 years himself Chat Icon

ETA - Everything, including the rejected implant where i did get half back - cost about 6-7K.

Re: Q if you have had dental implants

I am in the process of implants now. Missing 2 teeth on the upper right. I was born without a second tooth, and then has a root canal and bridge there for many years. When I got an infection under the bridge, both teeth were now gone. It's not visible unless I open my mouth REAL wide, so I am going without teeth there for now.

The tooth was pulled and the bone graft was done right there. I waited 4 months for that to heal and then I had a full pano to check to see if the bone was good for the implants. It was, except in the space where I had no tooth.

So in September, I had the two implants placed, and on the one, a sinus cavity bump was done to get the implant up there into enough bone. I go back in March to do the impressions for the teeth and hopefully will be on my way with new teeth.

I don't carry dental insurance and I am on a 18-month payment plan, which isn't too bad. All totaled, for 2 implants, I'm paying just over $8K Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Q if you have had dental implants

I had a root canal in a tooth and than the entire tooth broke off so I had to have it pulled. I choose to get an implant.

The remaining tooth was pulled and the bone graft was placed on the same day. No real pain involved a little sore for a day or two but thats about it.

I had to go back and have xrays 2 months after the extraction and had my implant put in after 3 months. I did not wear a flipper at all because it is a molar as was not visible.

Having the actual implant put in was more painful than the extraction. Its a very strange feeling your whole head vibrate when they are placing the implant. I was uncomfortable for 2 days, and couldn't eat anything hard or crunchy for about a week.

Oral surgeon cost $2000
Dentist for cap & Crown-$770 (my insurance paid for small portion of cap and crown)

Q if you have had dental implants

I need two implants. Dr said they would do the extraction and grafts at the same time. He quoted me 14,000!!!!!!! I nearly died. My dental insurance only covers 2k/ year. I can't afford that, so I'm living with a temporary bridge until i figure something out. And until I have this baby lol.
