Extreme pain after root canal
I had a root canal done on my back molar yesterday. Once the numbing meds wore off, I've noticed if my tooth above it hits it a tiny bit, it is blinding pain-and I have a high tolerance. The pain is at the base of the tooth, where it meets the gum and below by the jawbone. Is this normal??

Re: Extreme pain after root canal
i had a root canal on my back molar last friday so i am just over a week out. I am just now able to chew on it. i had so much pain before the root canal for weeks.
there is a lot of trauma involved. I would give it another day or two and then call the dentist again. the pain is in the same tooth they worked on? or another tooth when it meets when you bite?
it could just be everything is irritated and will need some time to calm down.

Extreme pain after root canal
The pain is in the same tooth and shoots down to my jawbone. But it's like a blinding pain. I was in a lot of pain for the past week prior to it being done, but I'm having trouble eating at all.

Extreme pain after root canal
A different kind of pain, but my friend just had her wisdom teeth out and developed a dry socket with incredible pain. She was able to get this kit from Walgreens and said it helped pretty much instantly:
http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/red-cross-toothache-complete-medication-kit/ID=prod1769-product
Perhaps it would help you as well.
Clove essential oil is another natural remedy that helps with tooth/jaw pain.

Thank you for your replies. That's what I'm afraid of and the thought is terrifying. I'm such a big baby when it comes to the dentist and if I have to do this all over again

Extreme pain after root canal
Do you have to go back for part 2 of root canal? Did they place a temp crown? I'm dealing with something similar. I'm ten days out, I was in massive pain. Just finished antibiotics, but still really need Motrin 800 every 6-8 hours. Have a lot of throbbing still. There was so much trauma, I do think you need to give it some time, but i would still call the dentist.

I do but I'm pregnant. There's a temporary filling in right now but not a temporary crown. Tylenol isn't doing nearly enough but that's all I can take.

I'm sorry. I can imagine that being pregnant limits what you can take which doesn't help. I had to wait to get et a root canal done once and antibiotics helped me tremendously. Did you get any of those? I will say that I would call because -knock on wood- I don't have pain after.

I would call in the morning. It's better to stay on top of it than chance things getting worse. Also maybe check with your ob to set if there is anything stronger you can take our at least the ask what the max dose of Tylenol is you can take.

Re: Extreme pain after root canal
That happened to me once. The tapping of the tooth below (mine was top molar) was excruciating. I went back to dentist - he opened the office for me and he shaved down the temp so the teeth wouldn't touch. That was pretty damn painful too. But as soon as he did that? It was like heaven. I have very sensitive teeth so after a root canal i have had some severe pain.
You should call tmrw and see if the dentist can do that. Make temp shorter so there is no tapping from the above tooth. That'll help until the tooth "cools off" from the root canal.

Re: Extreme pain after root canal
Also make sure none of the temp filling fell Out bc if some DID and the that nerve is exposed that why you are in pain

I was going to say if the temp is to high it will hurt. He will need to file it down.
Def call. Shouldn't be that much pain

Even just a filling can be "high"
You know when you get a filling, they make you bite down on that carbon and drill until it's a comfortable bite. Same thing. With temp fillings, Drs can be a bit sloppy and not get it just right bc it's gonna be dealt with In a short time. I learned my lesson. I don't leave that chair unless the bite is absolutely perfect

Re: Extreme pain after root canal
A temp filling for a root canal it would be soft, almost gel like. Meaning if it was high she would grind it right off

Re: Extreme pain after root canal
No, blinding pain after a root canal is not normal! Call your dentist. Or even better, see an endontist!

Re: Extreme pain after root canal
Normally I would say its because of the way the temp crown is fitting but since its just a filling I would definitely call and make an appointment to take a look at it.

Extreme pain after root canal
So I went back to see my endontist. As it turns out, the root canal itself was a very difficult one due to to length and shape of the root. He said there was a lot of trauma and my gum is basically bruised. When my top tooth would bump the affected tooth, it would basically make the bruising worse. He was able to file down my top tooth instead of touching that one, which is a huge relief. I'm able to eat some soft stuff. He said it should be feeling better in a few slays once it has the chance to heal. So far, it's way better. Thank you all!
