Resume tips and question

I'm applying for this new job and I need it. Can anyone provide me some resume tips? Ive been so unhappy in my current position and one guy in this group I want to move to told me this job was opening up. But he can't just turn in my resume , our company it goes through an automated system looking for keywords and then they have new hire specialist look at them before they go to managers. So i need it to be top notch.

If you have 15 years of experience do you still put your GPA? Mine wasn't the greatest so not sure what to do? I got an MBA and had a great one but my bachelors not so much.

IMHO there is no reason to put a GPA if you have years of work experience. There is a caveat in that it might be "required" for some fields like legal for example.

But no. I am out of school 20+ years and will be starting to look for a job soon. I will just put my university and degee. I will not put my GPA. I think when you are out of school for X amount of years no one cares. This is my VERY humble opinion.

Re: Resume tips and question

I go through 100s of resumes and never once have I looked for a GPA nor have I ever seen one, I don't think.
You don't need to put it at this point

Re: Resume tips and question

Beef up the verbs and use ones that that show real action and initiative like: produce, analyze, design, implement, initiate, etc. Try to vary the verbs that describe what you do (eg avoid repetition).

Resume tips and question

How far do you go back when listing job history? Say I grad college in 2000, but didn't get into my current field until 2003. Do I still include those 3 years of work, that were entry level and unrelated? Typical first job out of college stuff.

No, I don't have the unrelated experience listed on my resume. Mine does go back to my first real job which was about 2 years out of college. I only have a few high level bullet points related to that job because it isn't really relevant anymore. It just allows me to say I have been in the industry longer.

OP: Add key words from the job description to your resume. I read an article that said online applications are set up with a filter system of 15-20 key words and that is how they filter through the resumes they receive. Some of the words are identical to those in the description and some are buzz words that they want to see.

Resume tips and question

Nothing unrelated. When I just redid my resume to get my current job, my precious 2 positions were the same, so I listed each with dates and ONLY the important top notch things I completed there, then beneath both of them I wrote my main responsibilities that crossed over for both. Make sure you don't leave any empty space between jobs. For example if you took time off to stay home, say so. the best resumes I've seen recently were from women who took time off with their kids and they wrote XXX family manager, and wrote caretaker, financial manager (because we usually are), etc. Most HR people don't like seeing gaps, fill it in with something.

Re: Resume tips and question

I only put my last job on my resume as it was so long but I will add the added years of experience on my cover letter since it was the same type of office work.

Re: Resume tips and question

The best tip I was ever given when I needed to amp up my resume was to go to a specialist. My good girlfriend, who was (before becoming a SAHM) a VP of HR at a Fortune 500 company... So, she was the person I went to for advice... Her advice was to see this woman: MJ Feld. I did, and she met with me and created me a resume and cover letter that has literally transformed my career. It has been about four years now since I did that and I can honestly say if it weren't for her doing my resume, there's no way I'd be where I am. It's funny because once I started using it I got called for just about every job I put in for. And when I would interview, people would comment on the resume and ask where I had it done. For a while, I had to start carrying her cards to give out!! LOL!

Oh you're welcome and yeah, I'm sure.

Unfortunately she prefers only meeting face to face and she doesn't have experience writing engineering resumes so she passed. Such a shame I was really looking fwd to her assisting me

I have sort of unrelated experience on my resume.

I graduated undergrad in 1996. Work in construction management until law school (2004-2007) and then put any legal experience on my resume.

I have the construction experience because I still work in construction but on the legal insurance side now.
