Re: Maternity Leave/STD question

wow, agree maternity leave is terrible in this country...but I am surprised how many companies give so little.

I work for a large company - I get 12 weeks paid and I can tack on any accrued vacation I have for the year (5 weeks). We also have flexible time when we return to work, discretionary upon your manager, but you can work out a schedule for the first 4 weeks you return to work shorter hours, etc.

She wants to save ALL her PTO or some of it? If she didn't save her PTO and took a vacation later in the year, wouldn't the vacation then be unpaid? So a week unpaid is a week unpaid, whether it's for a baby or a cruise to the Bahamas. Or is unpaid PTO never allowed? I can't see that being the case.

From my conversations with her, she is intending to take a vacation later on in the year with the baby to visit family OOS. So she would like to use all available days.

The company only offers 7 paid days to use how you wish, but apparently in this situation, not if you are leaving for maternity- they must be used for the first week of maternity.

It's a sad situation- she is a dedicated employee who has never been out once during her pregnancy. But this is apparently the policy of the workplace. When she is out, the workflow is crippled- it's a major downside to working for a small office.

ETA: you are able to take a day off if your PTO is depleted, but one would have to work on their day off to make it up. Or one would just not be paid for that day. There has never been an instance of an employee taking a week off for a vacation if they do not have the time.

When I started an old job, the policy was similar. It's a miserably unfair deal because women would come back from maternity leave and have zero days to take. They would come in sick, would be scrambling to find help on certain days, and had no vacation time for months on end.

The policy changed right before I decided to TTC and it was a wonderful new policy. 8 weeks full pay, and any additional time taken was unpaid. So unfair to the women that had babies just a few months prior.

I think the woman should speak with HR, the owner, whoever because it is such an awful policy. They should be able to work out something.

If more women (and men) would speak up, We would have better policies in this country!!

To add: my advice, everything can be negotiated. I fought for extra weeks for personal reasons and was able to use it.

when I had DS i worked for Penguin (books). We were given 6 weeks full salary. the first week was the waiting period for disability (of a measly $156). Penguin paid me the difference of my salary with disability. To take the rest of the 12 week FMLA I had to use whatever vacation time I had. AT the time I was in an anniversary year so I had 5 weeks + bonus week of which I Had used earlier in the year. So i used the rest of the 5 weeks I Had that carried me through dec since he was born late OCt.

However, Penguin didnt let you roll over vacation time. So when my coworker had her NOV baby, the vacation time she banked that year she couldnt use to carry into January. She would have to advance that next year's vacation. when she had her 2nd NOV baby a few years later, she complained to HR how that was being unfair to women in the company and threatened a lawsuit.

and I believe they worked with her and may have changed the policy. Im not sure. But then they were bought by Random House so i Have no idea what the policy is.

my SIL works for VIctorias secret and due with a baby in March. Its so sad to me that a company that is run by mainly women has such a sh*tty policy. She gets like 5 weeks and then the rest is paid time off. so in order not to blow through all her paid time off she is only planning on being home like 9 weeks or something.

When I started with Newscorp in 2014 they had JUST changed their policy to 12 full weeks paid maternity leave. you dont have to use accrued vacation time or anything.

its such BS the maternity leave policies in this country and how horrific they are. They set lots of women up for failure.

Re: Maternity Leave/STD question

I'm a teacher and I get no guaranteed paid time at all...I have to use my sick time (if I have it) to cover the first 6 weeks, then anything additional is guaranteed unpaid. If I use all my sick days (I get 12 for the year), then any day I have to take for the rest of the year is unpaid.

Maternity Leave/STD question

Maternity leave in this country is abysmal. The sad thing is my company is a multinational company.so all my non US counterparts get 6 months to 1 year of paid leave. They follow US standards here and give us something but nothing like my coworkers get.

When I came back at 12 weeks I remember a coworker in another country why I was back so soon, told her the policy and she was sad for me.

Re: Maternity Leave/STD question

When I had my kids, I did not need to use my vacation days prior to going out. I had STD through the state, and I also paid into a STD plan through my insurance at work. My leave was unpaid through work and i only received what I got through STD.

(FYI if anyone can get Aflac through work or even privately, pay into their STD plan, it's so affordable and such an awesome plan to have).

I would think that IF she wanted to stay out longer than the 6-8 weeks she would have to use her time. But I don't think that's the case.

But like others said, policy is policy. Being it's a small company, I would think they would be a little more lenient.

ETA: they also offer a bunch of AFLAC plans, but not the maternity one...and I have to pay my insurance premiums during weeks 6-12, not sure if that is standard or not.
