Does anyone have a Dachshund
If so- do you have pet insurance. We recently adopted our dog from north shore. She has 30 days free insurance. We are unsure exactly how old she is. She's definitely 4+. She was rescued from a puppy mill and is a little banged up from all she went through. She's on the mend but did have a significant amount of dental work done. I was given a quote through PetPlan, which she was given from north shore. It is $48.50 a month. Is it worth it? This is for a $200 deductible along with 80% reimbursement. I know they have a tendency to have back issues from what we know she doesn't but I guess you never know. Anyone in general have pet insurance?

important to know with pet insurance. When they turn 9 the cost goes up a bit. 80% reimbursement means, the customary cost not of the true price. ex, if the vet charges $150, insurance feels they should only charge $80, they cover 80% of their cost not your vets. Call the insurance company and check I have not had insurance for years but that is how it was. ALSO, many times you pay the VET bill in full and you submit the bills for reimbursement. Ask you vet what their policy is.
The cost for pet insurance is always higher in NY too
added: like people they will not cover any pre-existing illness or injury before I think 60-90 days.
I had a $100 dec, through Petshealth care plan and when I started it was $22.00 a month for the value plan, yrs ago.
I did like it, she got hurt a lot, but if you only take your dog in once a yrs, you are paying the entire bill.
FM is you have ??
congrats on your new addition.

Re: Does anyone have a Dachshund
I have a mini dachshund, he's 9 now. We've used VPI pet insurance since he's been 6 mos. It's about $60/mo, the best plan. It's def come in handy a few times. Yes, they're very prone to back problems, herniated discs, do your best to limit all stairs and jumping. Good luck, they are the funniest, most stubborn, cuddly loving pets.

Re: Does anyone have a Dachshund
I'd probably recommend it. My mom has a Dachshund, this is her second of this breed and she is insured. Her first dog had some kind of spinal issue which required surgery. It cost $10k and did not save her in the end; I do not know how much insurance would have covered. As a PP said they are prone to back issues so it might be a good investment.

We have insurance for our dog. Best thing ever. Try 24petwatch. You can start with a cheaper plan and then increase coverage when the dog is older or if you need more coverage. They pay 80% of the actual bill ( not as pp stated 80% of what they think it should cost). Get it as soon as possible because they don't cover or existing conditions. Surgery for dogs is $$$$$.

Re: Does anyone have a Dachshund
Did someone say dachshund? Me, Me, Me, Me. I have one now and I had one many years ago. My dog is going to be 12 years old in February. I got him when he was 1. I do NOT have pet insurance. I looked into it when we got him. Keep in mind, this was back in 2005. At that time, any pet insurance that I looked at specifically excluded diseases that were common to the breed. I was not going to get pet insurance that didn't even cover dachshund back problems. My first dachshund had horrible back problems and he had a major surgery. I feared it with this dog but he has not had the same issues. He still acts like he is about 5 years old. If you do buy the insurance, read the policy very carefully. Now, post some pics.

Re: Does anyone have a Dachshund
As a follow up to my post above, I just did some very, very quick research. My interpretation is that some companies will consider a condition like a back problem in a dachshund to be pre-existing simply because the breed is prone to it, and some will not. There are message boards where people posted that their back surgery claims were approved but they weren't too sure what would happen when they submitted the claims. I hope this helps.

Thank you so much everyone for the info. She has 30days with pet plan from north shore. I'm going to read that policy to see what is included and what extending it would entail! I will try to post a photo of her!

I have a doxie. No pet insurance. I looked into it, but did not get it. My dh and I limit his jumping as he has gotten older. Also he is crated sometimes which prevents him from jumping.

In regards to the crate- she has severe separation anxiety is there anything we can do? She has been using the bathroom in the house on spite when something that she does not like is occurring

I have a male. He has severe separation anxiety. We almost got kicked out of our apartment because of it. We had to crate him when he was young because he liked to destroy things. Currently dh and I work opposite schedules so he is almost never left alone for long.
My sister has a 2 female doxies to keep each other company. They also go in the house out of spite.

My sister has 2 mini doxies and they also use the house as a bathroom for spite. No matter how she has tried to correct it, nothing has worked. I just think it's the breed bc they can be stubborn.
