Do you think a Christmas cash gift should be prorated?
DH started a new job this summer. He and his partner decided to give out cash gifts to the staff. DH paid the same as his partner even though DH has only been there for 6 months.
There is also one employee who started just 2 months ago and DH and his partner gave her the same gift that other employees who worked the entire 12 months.
DH is fine with paying the same as his partner. He doesn't want staff to be disgruntled over a few hundred dollars. I didn't think a person who worked for 2 months deserved the same amount as the others who worked 12 months though.
Do you think the 2 month employee should get paid the same as the ones who have been employed the full 12 months?

If it's a gift, I would say yes the same. If it's a bonus based on work, then no. But, I will say that in the large company where I worked no one got Christmas gifts and there was a formula for bonuses, so I've never worked in the same type of place you are describing.

Being that it is a gift (not an in incentive annual bonus), yes. It was nice of them to give evenly,I agree with your DH especially if it was just a few hundred bucks.
I prefer working for men because they don't care about small stuff like this

It is basically a holiday bonus because the company doesn't give the staff a bonus.
I used to calculate bonuses with my old boss. Everything was based off performance. That is what I am used to. The superstars got big six figure bonuses and low performers got nothing. If someone was there for a partial year, that employee would not be paid the same as someone who was there the full year.

"Christmas gift" and "pro - rated" should never be in the same sentence. It's a gift, not a bonus, merit raise, etc. it's based on a kind gesture, not performance. Jmo.

I know DH would rather give more to the better employees but just keeping with the tradition since he is new. I suggested giving an add on gift to some who really go above and beyond but DH thought it might cause drama in the office.

His heart is in the right place but he's right - that would def cause drama. Do they do annual merit based raises? I'll have to read up again above and see if that was mentioned. I'm a big advocate for annual raises based on performance. I just think when it comes to a Xmas gift, it should be the same for everyone :)

I had a similar situation in my company. Ultimately I decided to do the same for everyone. Happy employees = better job performance :)

Christmas gift is the same. My old company it was a week of pay, I miss that. Bonus is based on length of time with company.

I think you are absolutely right. a gift is a gift. Bonus is different. DH's staff does not receive bonuses so this is it.
DH and I are both only used to getting performance based bonuses. We both never received gifts aside from vendors sending the usual treats to the office.

My DH was exactly in this position. Small company.
He ABSOLUTLY gave the new guy the same. At Ben there for only 6 months. He kicked ass and took names for that 6 months.
So the ans is it depends. The question is DO the deserve it?
Your DH did the right thing. Is it wirth a few hundred bucks?
If I was the new guy I would not expect it. But would be happy to see I was valued. This kind of good will goes a long way.

Re: Do you think a Christmas cash gift should be prorated?
It depends how much money we are talking about. If it's not much then I think it's a nice gesture to give the new employee the same. If we are talking a lot of money then definitely pro-rated.

my company did not give everyone the same amount. People there less than 6 month got a different amount then those that have been there for years.
I have been there 8 months and still received from what I know less then those that have been there for years.
I would like to have gotten the same amount but, I understand, I have not been with the company 11 yrs etc

I would never think I would get the same as someone who has been there longer. Unless maybe both of us have been there for years. But after only beig there for 6 months I'd be happy with whatever I was given.

Re: Do you think a Christmas cash gift should be prorated?
DH's company pro rates Xmas bonuses, if you didn't work the full year leading into the bonus you will get less than you would've if you were there all year. I think that's fair.
ETA - Xmas bonuses are mostly performance based but the overall amount will be adjusted down if you haven't worked a full year at the company.

Gifts and Bonuses are two different things. Bonuses should be done on a performance basis and length of time in some cases.
Gifts should all be equal depending on position and not be prorated.
DH gets his bonus in September and it is solely based on performance. If he was out for an extended period for family leave as an example, it would be prorated.
He also gets a holiday "gift" every manager gets the same amount regardless of time or performance.

Yes, pro-rate, esp if it is a significant amount (over $100).
