Is anyone else freaked out by all these robberies going on? Especially the ones targeting mostly women stores? Now Babies r us, destination maternity a few weeks ago...also local home invasions and robberies. I am afraid to go anywhere with my kids that I think might be targeted. It's always this time of year. I was held at gunpoint in a store robbery many years ago and it's very scary.

Re: Robberies this time of year

I'm so sorry to hear of your scary experience.

It's true. This time of year seems to have a lot more armed robberies. People are desperate. try to go about your business as usual but be extra cautious. Don't walk looking at your phone. Park in well lit spot, where you can safely see around you. When you get into to your car, lock the doors ASAP.

Now being in the store when it's held up, not much you can do there. But it seems they aren't harming the customers. They are taking what they want and going.

I too am on edge this time of year because of this. I try to stay alert

Im definitely on edge... A house down the street from me got robbed last night. I live in a nice town so its a bit scary. Even reading the local newspaper today, there was mention of two suspects still on the loose from current robberies.

Yes very scary. I don't bring the kids shopping with me, too distracting. I did a lot of online shopping this year. We also leave everything in the house on, with the alarm when we leave this time of the year.

We have been very cautious and also noticing the police patrol our very quiet area.

One more thing I do during this time , I don't carry a purse when I go shopping. I Keep phone, cash, keys in my coat pockets (inside pockets ).

Same guy doing the ones you are referencing. Fourteen since August across Suffolk and Nassau. Always does either store opening or closing and looks for places that employ females. Ties them up with zip ties or novelty handcuffs, shows handgun, takes cash and flees on foot. Is very good about keeping his head down around cameras and wears a black mask.

Robberies this time of year

5 days before Christmas when I was 9 I was with my mom aunt brother and cousin at a local shopping center. A car parked right next to ours, we saw this group in the store, they went to the car, we went to the car, my mom went to get in and the grabbed her purse, she was dragged 40 ft by this car trying to get her purse. They got it and eventually my mom got loose. Right in front of me and that image is forever burned in my mind. I never go to stores, ever. I do all of my shopping online. The only store I ever go to is trader joes once every 2 weeks and rite aid by my house if I am in dire need. My husband and I go get gas together and if I need to go to a store we go together. It's so terrifying this world we live in. I have an alarm on each of my windows my garage and my two doors. I keep the shades in my house completely closed, no one can see in ever and we always keep the front light on. My downstairs, my sublevel in the back but still semi- above ground, we have cast iron bars on it (nice ones that look decorative). My gates are chained and padlocked shut as well. I hate living this way, I really do. I had to run to the bank today and had a meltdown thinking what if something happens. I truly wish this world can be a better place. I don't have a child but if I do, I don't even know how I'll handle day to day things like them going to school. As a psychologist/ behavior specialist I truly wonder why criminals behave the way they do and why people engage in these acts and this is just one thing I'll never understand.

I hate shopping with the kids. I always feel like a target especially in the parking lot. It takes forever to get them in their car seats. I feel like someone could jump me from behind.

Also that Kohls kidnapping has freaked me out even more this year.

Well from what I read, this is a serial robber and he has done 14 robberies or more on long island since august. so it's not just "this time of year". it is scary and sad though. so much crime and theft. some people are crazy.

Im not too sure... My mom was recently robbed in her area by an unmasked man who they havent caught. A few days later, the same thing happened in Garden City. Just last week, the exact same thing in East Hills. None of the perpetrators fit the same discription. The only common link is that the victims drive expensive cars and live in affluent neighborhoods... Alhough that alone can make you a target.

someone just posted a pic on Facebook. It was basically saying to fold your cardboard boxes inside out so thieves don't see what you have in your household.

No I haven't. As a behavior specialist I am very aware of my feelings and actions and what I can do to change them or desensitize myself. I just choose not to. I just try to live my life to hopefully see the good in people and while I'm overly cautious I do believe there is good in the world. To kind of I guess "deal" with my feelings I make an effort to be extra nice. Whenever I drive through Starbucks I always pay for the car behind me no matter what, my husband and I adopt a family from church each year, and I always buy my staff Dunkin donuts just because. I make an effort to do nice things for people purposely for those that don't know me and without recognition in hope that it makes a difference in their life because you just never know who they are. And while I hate living guarded ultimately it's how I feel safe.

Yes. The 1 man robbing stores, zip ties, etc - that has been going on. But the random extra robberies? Always go up this time of year. It's very scary and very sad.

Re: Robberies this time of year

At the press conference regarding the string of robberies that appear to be connected and the same perpetrator committing them, the PD advised residents to try and avoid stores around opening and closing times. That is when this particular individual, in all fourteen robberies, carried out the crimes.

So, just figured I would pass that along so if people want to take a few simple measures to hopefully avoid this, they can.

Re: Robberies this time of year

I just saw a post on fb about a lot of purse snatchings going on. Targeting elderly women.

This is the world that we are bringing our kids into and it couldn't be any scarier.

I find a slight relief that the 14 of them are connected and one person. at least its not just a bunch of different people just robbing stores though I know there is robberies happening all the time.

IMO the reason for the spike in robberies is the HUGE HERION problem on LI that doesn't seem to be getting any better. I don't even know what anyone is doing to make it better.
