Santa question

Does anyone with kids (or when you were a child your parents) just not do Santa but still celebrate Christmas? If do you know anyone who never told their child about Santa?

Just curious after today's situation. My DD (turning 10 very soon) came home from her dads work Christmas party and said Santa was so weird "like I don't even know him and I sat on his lap. He was all warm and creepy"! I LOL but thought wow smart kid who is too old to sit on a strange mans lap! Why do we do this to them!?

I also just wish I could let her know the gifts are for me that we have a budget and a bunch of other things that stress me out when it comes to Santa and Christmas.

I guess this is the last year she "believes" anyway.

Of course there are families out there that have children who don't believe in Santa anymore, but still celebrate Christmas.

I would've told your daughter that the warm and creepy Santa (gross), was just a man in a costume. Someone pretending to be Santa. My children believe in Santa, but they know those mall ones, breakfast with Santa ones, and the like are just "helpers".

Santa question

My daughter still believes in Santa (she's 9) but knows the people at the mall and that she sees on TV are just "helpers" and not the real Santa. She also told me that alot of kids at school do not think Santa is real and why do they still get gifts, so I told her that when you believe in Santa, he brings your gifts on Christmas Eve and if you do not believe in Santa anymore that your parents buy the gifts. Santa just helps mommy and daddy's save money (lol). I also told her that just because people don't believe in a man who is Santa, that Christmas is a magical time and everyone even adults should believe in the magic of Christmas. She is good with that for now. Also, she did not sit on Santa's lap this year as she thinks she is too old and just made sure to mail a letter instead.

Even when we stopped believing as kids we continued to celebrate Xmas morning. Nothing changed, we just knew the presents came from our parents instead of Santa. Chat Icon

This, and I was probably 8 or 9 when I "learned the truth" about Santa.

Re: Santa question

We've always been honest with DC about Santa. He's just a character, like Mickey Mouse or the Chuck-E-Cheese mouse. He's not spying on you all the time, and presents come from Mom and Dad.

My DC enjoy the "magic" of Christmas as much as any other kids.

She knows they are dressed up and there are many people that dress up as Santa.

Thanks this is what I meant. If there are people out there that NEVER did the Santa thing not just when their children found out the truth.

I don't think I ever believed in Santa. I knew the gifts under the tree were from mom and dad. Santa was cool, fun, magical but not real just part of the Season to make it festive..

My parents did this with us. They didn't like the feeling of "lying" to us by pretending this person existed and was real when he's not - he's just a special part of Christmas like all the other special parts and we were informed of that accordingly. I am doing the same with my son. I guess the other plus is there's no disappointing "he's not real" moment either. I never had that growing up which was kind of nice. I remember some of my friends being sad, annoyed, devastated -- a whole range of emotions Chat Icon I'm sure they were ultimately OK but I do recall it and I didn't have that.

Re: Santa question

Those warm sweaty guys with the cushion up their red sweaters and beards that fall off are "helpers" and we have a good giggle at them. The "real" guy lives in the north pole and my kids 9 and 6 fully believe it him and I LOVE it!! and I will continue to instill that part of the magic of christmas in my kids lives for as long as I can. The world we live in is so hard and cold sometimes that I think the magic of Santa is so important for kids and I fully embrace it and am a big Santa advocate. I also dont have any jarring memories of when I found out about Santa - it most certainly did not have any long term effects on meChat Icon

A friend of mine is doing the same thing with her kids.

Re: Santa question

I wanted to raise my children teaching them about the pagan traditions associated with christmas. Focus on what the christmas tree represents and why it's a season of giving. I would skip the whole Santa and Jesus part.
DH had very strong opinions about ensuring our DD grew up believing in Santa. I caved. It was clearly more important to him than it was to me.
