Visiting a vegan household?

Looking for some thoughts on what is reasonable to expect when staying (long weekend) at a vegan household? Is it acceptable to bring your own non-vegan food? What about if it needs to be cooked?

Specifically interested in how to manage the visit when you are bringing a four year old along….

I have my own opinions based on a recent experience, but am curious for thoughts from others.

TIA!

I would assume that every vegan (and even non-vegan) house is different. Some vegans don't eat meat for health reasons, others for moral reasons. There is no "reasonable" thing to "expect" unless you talk to the hosts directly.
Every household may also have different lines in the sand as to what they are OK with other people eating in their home. Some may be OK with fish, others may be OK with eggs and milk, while others may not want any animal products of any kind in their house.

Agreed. Honestly I'd be having a conversation about food with anyone I was going to stay with with my 3.5yo for a long weekend. I think it's reasonable to ask if they mind if you bring a bag a chicken nuggets or something he would eat for dinners. If they are not, then I would try to respect that and find a way to make it work for a few days. Breakfast and lunch seem liked they would be easy enough and for dinner try to come up with some kid friendly options.

Visiting a vegan household?

I would expect a lot of meals to be at restaurants or take out, which is mostly what we do on vacation anyway. But it's definitely going to vary. I would discuss in advance what you'd prefer to do and if they are ok with it. I think most would at least be ok with you eating meat there. They are probably worried about being a good host to you too.

Re: Visiting a vegan household?

I would ask the hosts what they are comfortable with as far as what to bring.

I'm vegan and I really wouldn't care what my guests wanted to bring. I would actually talk to my guests before hand to see what they like to eat. My husband is not vegan and I make all his food. It is what it is, I'm not going to put my values upon someone else, especially a guest in my home. That's just me though.

I would not expect to be able to cook meat in a vegan household.

Exactly...I think talking to the hosts is your best bet. If you're comfortable enough to stay with them, then you should be able to have the conversation without it feeling too awkward.

DH and I are vegetarian for moral reasons and we do not allow meat to be cooked in our house...order it in, fine...but it can't be in my pots and pans and I can't smell it cooking in the house because it will make me gag. And people who stay with us know that...I have no problem reminding them of it well in advance.

Visiting a vegan household?

the best part about talking to the host is that you have a built-in reason... your child. this is assuming that it might be a touchy subject.

hope you discover cool, new dishes

Re: Visiting a vegan household?

I would speak to them, my brother isn't vegan but vegetarian and he can't have cross contamination. He's vegatarian for health reasons though, so if you cook meat on his pans and then he uses the pan, he will get very sick. But I know he doesn't mind if I cook my kids stuff on disposable stuff ((I hit up a dollar store and buy cheap tins to cook nuggets or whatever on). So I think it's best to talk to the hosts and see what their thoughts are, because everyone is different.
