Re: To Hire or not?

You can't ask for a dr note. If I am down with a stomach virus I don't go to the dr.

Give her a second chance.

To Hire or not?

Give her a second chance but tell her Monday she must call before. I was so sick recently and could not call so my DH called the office for me. Maybe she doesn't have someone to do that for her. Worse case she's on probation anyway and you have time to see if it works out

Give her another chance. There are so many viruses around and I would never go to the dr for a stomach virus. I don't know if she worked before but at my job you have two hours after your start time to call in and some people wait because their manager wants to speak with them.

I think she should be given another chance..

If she was great on her first day you may be losing out on a great worker if you do not hire her over this instance...perhaps she was unsure of the protocol on calling out?

Is this by any chance her first job?

Can you request a doctors note to verify her illness? If she is great in every other way, I would tend to give her a second chance. If she was eh, I think I'd let her go.

Even if she was legitimately sick, I feel like its highly unlikely that she'd have a doctors note for what sounds like a stomach bug. Most people don't rush to the doctor for something like that if it only lasts a day or two -- you just let it run its course.

I understand that. But if it is a requirement to keep your job or is requested by your job, she could have gone to get checked out and document her illness. Some employers require it. I required it as a professor if a student missed my class due to illness.

Who does that for ONE day of sickness? Honestly, with my high deductibles a sick visit can cost me $200 therefore, I am picky about when I actually go to the doctor. I am not quick to run to the doctor because most things run their course and there is nothing they can do anyway. Aside from the fact, if I had a stomach virus and was throwing up constantly the absolute LAST thing I would EVER do is get in a car and drive to the doctor. I can barely get out of bed or be two feet from the bathroom when I've had a stomach virus.

I would give her one more chance. What's the harm? She is still on probation so if she doesn't work out you can still let her go.

At my prior employer, we were required to have a doctor's note if we were out any day Friday-Monday. I've come to realize that we were held to a much higher standard than many industries.

To Hire or not?

I'd say give her one more chance as it could have been a one time crazy thing. But if she isn't perfect going forward (coming in on time, etc.) then you know your answer.

I find that ridiculous. I'd gladly give them that note along with the doctor bill for an unnecessary visit to the doctors office because they don't trust their employees to take the time they need when they are sick.

I'm pretty sure she's not coming in on Monday.

Another possibility is that she got a call for another interview for something else or even started somewhere else she had applied for.

It could be a million things. A medical problem like anxiety or a drug or drinking problem also come to mind.

100% she wasn't just sick. Unless you're in a coma, you can make a 30 second phone call in the morning.

I personally wouldn't go to the doctor's if I was just throwing up for a day. That is a waste of a copay and the doctor's time. So asking for a doctor's note is silly IMO. LOL should've read ahead

Well, as a PP stated, at some jobs they actually REQUIRE it. My DH's friend works for a large local communications company, and they strictly require a doctor's note for ANY and ALL sick day(s) taken.

I was simply asking if the OP's place of employment required it up front so that she could request it of the worker to confirm whether or not she was actually sick. I think you all are misinterpreting me.

To Hire or not?

A drs note is the most rediculous thing I've ever heard of in my life. If she just started the job she may not even have health insurance in place. Give her a second chance and address the 2 hour last call in with her so it doesn't fester in your mind.

Did she have the number to call?

Maybe she froze or panicked when she realized she wasn't going to be able to come in on her 2nd day.

There is no reason to overthink it I'd just address it on Mon and move on especially if she seems like a great worker.

I totally get what you're saying, I wasn't directing my comment at you in that YOU personally think she should've had a dr note. Just a generalization that it's crazy to me any employer would require one for a one day illness. Seems a bit much to me, that's all. Chat Icon

On the Dr's note issue, anyone can go to the Dr. and get a note for a stomach aliment. Not like they can actually check!

I agree she should have called sooner then 2 hr after her start time, but that is WHY she is on probation. Probation allows you to see what kind of person and worker she is.

Give her a second chance. I too would not go to the Dr unless I was sick for days, so I would not have note for HR. I would mention to her next time she is sick, you expect her to you before her set time to work.

I agree, but I do know that at my job I may need a sick note if I am out the day before or after a holiday or vacation, so even if I had a stomach virus, I would still go to the doctor because I need that note just in case they ask for it. I think people who aren't really sick usually wouldn't make the effort to go to the doctor for a note if they were just blowing off work.

I wouldn't hire her. She should have called BEFORE 9am to let you know she wasn't coming. Even if it was just 15 mins before, that's better than 2 hours later; especially since it was only her second day.

She was hired but is on probation from the way I read it.

The question should be, do I firer her before probation end or give her another chance

Timing aside, had she done this instead, as a co-worker I would have been LIVID. I have emetophobia. Even insinuation of vomiting sends me into panic attacks. It's extremely contagious and it's doing no one any favors by her coming in.

I say give her a second chance. It may be a moot point if she doesn't show up tomorrow anyway. But it sounds like she was a good worker.

If she came in sick with a stomach virus and infected me, I'd be LIVID

We are all adults and I insist on being treated as one at work . And i treat MY employees as adults.

Sometimes you get sick, shitt happens.

You aren't a bad employee for getting sick nor should you be expected to come in while vomiting in a bag and infecting others.

Yes, she should have called earlier. That is a given.

But if I felt I had to come to work while vomiting because my employer was that much of a stickler, I'd be looking for another job.

I would not hire her. I do not fault her for being sick. It can happen. I fault her for not calling on time and giving you enough notice. If she can't do that on the second day of work, it is going to be a problem going forward.

To Hire or not?

I am really shocked at all the people that say she was sick so give her a pass this time. The point is not that she called in sick, I don't think anyone has an issue with that. The point is that she did not call into work until TWO hours past her start time. That is inexcusable and shows absolutely no responsibility. If they can't show responsibility on day 2 of a job then I wouldn't have high hopes when they are there a year or more. When I was working if we showed up more than 15 minutes late without calling we were written up and if we didn't show up to work, we were put on instant probation. If it happened again on probation, you were fired with cause.

To Hire or not?

In all honesty, I would tell her to not bother coming back in. I've been managing people for 20 years. I've seen/heard it all. I've had people get into car accidents on the way to interviews and still hired them. Why? Because of how they handled the situation (as well as having the skills needed for the job.) I've had people get sick their first day/week of work. It happens. That's not the issue. It's how they handle it.
If she couldn't pick up the phone and call you, I see it as a red flag. It was her second day of work people!!!
