To Hire or not? Updated

As a hiring manager, I had an employee who did not show up on her second day of work (was scheduled to come in at 9). She called two hours later saying she was really sick (throwing up, sorry if tmi). Is this a reason to not hire someone (she is in a probationary period anyway) or give a second chance? She'd only worked for us one day and this was the second day of a training period. The cynical part of me thinks she overslept. I'm thinking do not offer the position, but am not sure if I am being too tough.

ETA: She was fantastic on her first day, and good workers are hard to find.

Update: We gave her a second chance ;) It's the Christmas season and so far so good!

Can you request a doctors note to verify her illness? If she is great in every other way, I would tend to give her a second chance. If she was eh, I think I'd let her go.

I'd give her a second chance.

A few years ago DH started a new job after being out of work for a while. He worked so hard and wanted so badly to make a good impression. His second week of work, he got violently ill on the bus. There was no way he was going anywhere but home, he was a mess. He was legitimately very, very sick. So, sometimes things just happen.

He did, however, call BEFORE he was supposed to be at work.

Second chance. Its only the second day. Give her the probationary period and make that call then. One time is no big deal to me.

Re: To Hire or not?

I would not.

It's not that she was sick. Yes, sometimes that happens.

It was that she didn't call until two hours after she was due at work.

Unacceptable unless she was hit by a bus and on life support, IMO.

To Hire or not?

Maybe I am cynical as well, but I would fire her. I would have been on the phone right away calling in sick. As soon as the business oppened. From experience, a lot of peopke I've given second chances to , have taken it as a pass to get away with whatever they want. There are many hard working people out there. On to the next. Just my cynical opinion.

Even if she was legitimately sick, I feel like its highly unlikely that she'd have a doctors note for what sounds like a stomach bug. Most people don't rush to the doctor for something like that if it only lasts a day or two -- you just let it run its course.

To Hire or not?

I agree let her go. My first month working at my current job I got a nasty stomach virus and was in the hospital I was so devastated that they would fire me since I was still on probation. Even while in the hospital I called and left a message since it was before business hour. Then I made call after call trying to get in touch with a live person just to speak to someone once the office opened. I feel like she should have been more responsible in at least calling prior and leaving a message. I know when your sick your head is in the clouds but you need to be responsible employee. If she was sick maybe she went back to bed and forgot to set an alarm to get up and call?
If you decide not to fire her I'd see if she shows up Monday and if she does make sure you let her know it's ok to be sick but she needs to call ASAP and follow your company policy and procedure for calling out.

100% agree

I was in a pretty bad car accident my first week of a new job. I called the office at 3am and left a message with management.

Re: To Hire or not?

Second chance. You can't control getting sick. Unfortunately a stomach virus doesn't know you are at a new job.
It's not like it was a head cold where you can suck it up and come in.
I was vomiting yesterday morning and there was no way I could even turn on my laptop much less drive in to work
I could barely get out of bed

I understand that. But if it is a requirement to keep your job or is requested by your job, she could have gone to get checked out and document her illness. Some employers require it. I required it as a professor if a student missed my class due to illness.

To Hire or not?

i am on the i would not bandwagon.

she probably slept late.

if she was throwing up sick, she was awake and had a minute to call...

even if it were the night before, you still set your alarm just to call in sick.

I have done this before... so the excuse doesn't fly in my book....

Who does that for ONE day of sickness? Honestly, with my high deductibles a sick visit can cost me $200 therefore, I am picky about when I actually go to the doctor. I am not quick to run to the doctor because most things run their course and there is nothing they can do anyway. Aside from the fact, if I had a stomach virus and was throwing up constantly the absolute LAST thing I would EVER do is get in a car and drive to the doctor. I can barely get out of bed or be two feet from the bathroom when I've had a stomach virus.

I would give her one more chance. What's the harm? She is still on probation so if she doesn't work out you can still let her go.

I agree, who goes to the doctor for one day of being sick? The only time I was required to bring in a doctors note was when I had to go on short term disability after being out for more than a week. That was company policy for insurance purposes.

I think the point is not that she was sick. Anyone could get sick and that is fine but the part that she called in 2 hours after the start time is the issue. That is inexcusable unless she was in the hospital or something. Part of having a job is responsibility and if you can not call in to your job before your expected start time on your second day of work, then that is a HUGE red flag to me.

I guess I would give her another shot but the fact that she called two hours later would really bother me.

What would have bothered me as a manager is that she called me 2 hrs after she was supposed to start work, if u were sick and that's the reason u can't come in to work, I'd expect u to call me asap. If she's in probation already, I wouldn't give her another chance.

Re: To Hire or not?

I know in my job I have to call in 1 hour prior to my start time unless it is an emergency (as deemed by my supervisor)...I can't imagine not calling in with plenty of notice and I am not a probationary employee! I'm not sure if I would give her a second chance normally, but you said it is hard to find good employees...if she seemed great on the first day, I might call her in, speak with her about the importance of calling in prior to her start time, and give her a second chance. That would put her on notice that you aren't thrilled with her calling in well past when she was supposed to start and hopefully keep it from happening again.
